Paper Parasols at Aji Sushi

Troy, Michigan | Photography by Buffet Authority

Aji Sushi makes one of its strongest visual statements overhead, inside a dining room that is quite full of details. A procession of Japanese-style paper parasols hangs beneath the restaurant’s dark ceiling, beginning with broad floral patterns near the front and receding through reds, pinks, blues and painted figures toward the back of the room.

Set against vivid orange architectural panels and the nearly black ceiling, the umbrellas read almost like pieces of suspended graphic art. Their different colors and patterns break up the restaurant’s long interior and draw the eye above the sushi bar, turning an otherwise functional stretch of ceiling into one of the room’s most distinctive features.

Aji Sushi serves an all-you-can-eat menu alongside its broader Japanese offerings, but the parasols give the Troy restaurant an identity that arrives before anything reaches the table.
