Stumphy’s Heads to the Moline, Illinois Riverfront as the Captain’s Table Name Returns

The final Sugar Maple brunch buffet was Sept. 27; the much larger riverfront restaurant is targeting a Nov. 4 opening.

Stumphy’s Restaurant & Bar served its final Sunday brunch buffet at Sugar Maple Golf Club on Sept. 27, closing one chapter after only about five months and preparing to open a considerably larger one on the Moline riverfront.

Owners Jason and Amy Stumphy are moving the restaurant into the former Captain’s Table property, with a target opening date of Nov. 4. Local reporting also says the couple plans to bring back the Captain’s Table name at the riverfront restaurant – a particularly full-circle move because it is where Jason and Amy first met while working in the late 1990s.

From a Golf Course Dining Room to a Riverfront Landmark

Stumphy’s opened at Sugar Maple Golf Club outside Geneseo in April 2026, with Jason leading the kitchen and Amy overseeing the front of house. The restaurant quickly established itself as more than a clubhouse stop, serving steaks, seafood, prime rib and other full-service dinner fare.

Its Sunday brunch buffet became the recurring abundance piece of the operation: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., priced at $21.99 and described by Stumphy’s as a spread of breakfast and lunch favorites. Sept. 27 was the final Sunday service at Sugar Maple before the move.

The destination ahead is on a different scale. According to reporting by the Geneseo Current, the Moline restaurant is expected to seat about 300 people indoors with another 75 on the patio, provide a substantially larger kitchen and eventually support a much larger staff. Stumphy’s expects to carry over roughly 60 percent of its current menu while adding items suited to the expanded operation, including a 24-ounce rock lobster tail.

The Captain’s Table Comes Around Again

The building itself carries decades of Quad Cities restaurant history. Captain’s Table operated on the Moline riverfront for years before a 2018 fire destroyed the previous structure during remodeling. The site was rebuilt, later operated as Catfish Charlie’s, and had been vacant since that restaurant closed in 2024.

For the Stumphys, the property is personal as well as larger. They met while working at the original Captain’s Table and later held their wedding reception there. Their return now comes as operators rather than employees, giving the move a story line that would sound almost too tidy if the addresses did not verify it.

One buffet question remains deliberately unanswered. Stumphy’s final Sugar Maple service included its $21.99 Sunday brunch buffet, but no firm announcement located by Buffet Authority confirms that the buffet will resume in Moline. The larger kitchen certainly gives Stumphy’s room to do it, but until the owners say Sunday buffet service is returning, that remains an open question worth watching as Nov. 4 approaches.
