Opal Grand Buffet is planning a sizeable second act for Homestead’s former Rock Bottom, with more than 400 seats and a menu stretching from Brazilian churrasco to Southeast Asian grilled seafood, sushi and regional Chinese cooking. The old Waterfront brewpub has the space for an ambitious dinner proposition.
As of October 8, Opal’s website and The Waterfront’s directory still say coming soon, and Opal is hiring. The earlier late-summer or early-fall target has not yielded an announced opening day. Prices and buffet inclusions remain unannounced, as does whether churrasco will be brought to the tables.
Andy Qian of The Opal Group told Table Magazine the menu would change seasonally, with American food joining the Brazilian and Asian offerings. An earlier Patch announcement included handcrafted desserts.
A restaurant with room for a party
Patch’s May report describes a 16,000-square-foot restaurant with serving stations and a large central bar. The private event hall alone is planned for more than 200 guests, with an entertainment system for celebrations and business gatherings.
The project would join several Pittsburgh dining names associated with The Opal Group, including Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings, Opa Fe, Top Pot Korean BBQ and the newer Okane.
Rock Bottom opened in 1999 as an original Waterfront tenant and closed at the end of its lease in 2023, according to WPXI. Opal’s plans first surfaced in October 2025, with fuller details reported in May and June 2026.
