Olive Garden Plans New Lunch Test Built Around Variety and “Abundance”

The chain will also promote its existing unlimited soup, salad and breadsticks lunch later this quarter.

Olive Garden is preparing to put more attention on lunch, including renewed marketing behind its existing unlimited soup, salad and breadsticks offer and a separate test platform that management says will deliver more variety and “abundance.” Darden Restaurants discussed both initiatives during its Sept. 24 earnings call.

The first piece is familiar. Olive Garden already sells a weekday lunch built around unlimited soup or salad and breadsticks, and Darden says it plans to promote that value proposition later in the quarter. Management said the campaign had been delayed while consumers were concerned about lettuce safety, an awkward complication for a lunch offer with salad in the title.

Olive Garden Will Put More Marketing Behind Unlimited Soup, Salad and Breadsticks

The more interesting development is a second lunch concept still in testing. Darden executives described it as providing more variety while leaning into the abundance diners already associate with Olive Garden. The company has not disclosed the test menu, participating markets, price or launch timing, so there is not yet enough information to call it a new national unlimited offer.

Even without a buffet line, Olive Garden has long occupied a peculiar place in abundance dining. Breadsticks keep arriving. Soup or salad keeps arriving. Never-Ending Pasta Bowl periodically turns the entrée itself into a refillable category. The brand has trained customers to understand that a fixed menu item can come with an open-ended component.

A Separate Lunch Test Is Being Built Around “Abundance”

The lunch test suggests Darden sees that abundance identity as something worth developing rather than merely maintaining. Whether the resulting platform is technically unlimited, a combination meal with broader choice, or something else remains unknown.

For now, the confirmed change is strategic rather than culinary: Olive Garden intends to talk more loudly about unlimited lunch and is building another lunch format around the same sense of plenty. The details are the next story.
