Mandarin Restaurant is bringing back its Moon Festival buffet September 8 through October 18, adding a small collection of seasonal dishes to the Ontario chain’s already expansive all-you-can-eat spread.
The newcomer this year is Duck Bao, joined by returning specialties including Ginger Beef, Spicy Mango Shrimp, Butternut Squash Soup and Lotus Moon Cake. Mandarin says additional Moon Festival items will appear on the buffet as well, with selections available while supplies last.
The promotion is less a reinvention than the return of a Mandarin tradition. Versions of the Moon Festival have appeared at the chain for years, periodically bringing special entrées, desserts, drinks and decorative touches to the restaurants during the early-fall season. The 2024 edition, for example, included Moon Sushi, Seafood Casserole, Lotus Moon Cakes, Pumpkin Pie and Ube Vanilla Ice Cream alongside other limited-time dishes.
That sort of seasonal programming fits Mandarin unusually well.
Founded in Brampton in 1979 and converted to a buffet format in 1986, Mandarin has grown to 29 restaurants across Ontario. But scale has never been the entire proposition. The chain has spent decades refining an unusually polished version of AYCE dining — large, carefully composed restaurants, attentive table service and buffets that feel managed rather than merely stocked.
It is something Buffet Authority has seen firsthand at Mandarin’s Windsor restaurant. There is an intentionality to the experience, from the dining rooms and warm towels to the presentation of the buffet itself. Mandarin brings refinement to the buffet experience.
The Moon Festival works within that same philosophy. Rather than replacing the familiar Mandarin experience, a handful of temporary dishes, moon cakes and seasonal flourishes give regular guests something different to discover inside it.
For six weeks this fall, the Mandarin Restaurant tradition will continue.
