J.C. Hwang’s Albany is targeting a mid-October opening with an unusually segmented daily format: a $14 weekday breakfast buffet, an $18 lunch buffet and a completely different table-service Sichuan dinner menu later in the day.
The downtown Albany restaurant is one of two concepts planned for the same property by John Hwang’s new Archway Hospitality Group. Rather than stretching one menu from morning through night, J.C. Hwang’s is being designed to change personality as the day progresses.
Breakfast and Lunch Will Be Buffet Service at J.C. Hwang’s Albany
The breakfast and lunch buffets are expected to draw from six global cuisines, giving the daytime operation a broad international identity rather than a single-cuisine steam-table lineup. The $14 breakfast and $18 lunch prices position the buffets as relatively accessible downtown meals, particularly compared with the larger fixed-price AYCE concepts now common in sushi, hot pot and Korean barbecue.
Dinner is not buffet service. The restaurant is expected to shift to a $42 table-service Sichuan menu featuring 38 savory dishes and four desserts. That change is central to understanding the concept: the buffet is a daypart strategy, not the restaurant’s only identity.
Dinner Changes the Restaurant Into a Sichuan Table-Service Concept
Archway is also developing Robata Albany behind the restaurant, but that will be a separate $48 all-you-can-eat charcoal-grill experience with its own opening timeline. The two projects together turn one downtown property into a small concentration of abundance formats without forcing them into the same dining room.
Mid-October remains the target for J.C. Hwang’s rather than a guaranteed opening date. If it holds, Albany will soon have a restaurant where the question “Is it a buffet?” depends entirely on what time you ask.
