Golden Corral Says Some Closed Restaurants Could Reopen Under New Franchise Owners

The buffet chain acknowledges higher attrition while pursuing ownership transfers and an existing six-restaurant development pipeline.

Some closed Golden Corral restaurants could serve another buffet under new franchise owners, according to the company, which has acknowledged a higher-than-normal rate of restaurant attrition this year.

In an October 16 report, Restaurant Dive said Golden Corral was working to transfer restaurants to other franchise groups or company operations. Several closed locations are likely to reopen under new franchise ownership, the chain told the publication. It did not name those restaurants or provide reopening dates.

The possibility gives regulars something more specific to watch than another national list of shuttered dining rooms. A closed building may still have a next operator, although the company’s statement is not a promise for every location that has lost its buffet.

Closures with different local circumstances

Golden Corral told Restaurant Dive that 99 percent of its restaurants are franchise-owned and that closure reasons vary with the individual businesses operating them. A similar company response appeared in USA TODAY’s October 14 coverage, which also reported the prospect of reopening some locations under new owners.

That report gathered closures in six states, including Canton, Ohio, on February 1; Alton, Illinois, on April 30; and Davenport, Iowa, on July 6. In Boynton Beach, Florida, the restaurant closed July 26 with the end of its lease among the circumstances cited. Boise, Idaho, closed in September, while Brownsville, Texas, closed September 14.

The explanations were not uniform. Alton’s owners said their location could no longer operate sustainably. Brownsville’s franchisee pointed to the cost of required improvements and higher expenses, including rent. Other locations did not publicly detail a reason. These are documented examples, rather than a complete count of every Golden Corral closure in 2026.

New restaurants remain in development

The ownership-transfer response adds a new element to the difficult-year picture Buffet Authority covered in September. The chain is also continuing to point toward a six-restaurant development pipeline first announced April 30.

That announcement identified Knoxville, Tennessee, and Kissimmee, Florida, as under construction. Baytown, Texas; St. Petersburg, Florida; Spanish Fort, Alabama; and San Juan, Puerto Rico, were in pre-construction. The October reporting reiterates that existing pipeline.

Golden Corral has also been developing more ways to fit a buffet into available real estate, including restaurant and retail conversions, travel-center opportunities and a smaller prototype. Its April announcement paired those formats with incentives for qualified franchisees opening new locations.

For people following a particular closed restaurant, the missing details are still local: who might take it over, whether the site will reopen and when. Golden Corral has not identified which restaurants are likely to return. Those announcements, if they come, will tell former regulars whether their own buffet is part of the plan.
