69 Sushi opened in Overland Park’s Stanley Square with more dining space and plenty beyond sushi on the buffet. Oysters, lamb chops, fried chicken and seafood boil joined the rolls, with tiramisu waiting for the dessert round.
Emily Wu and partner Lucky Guo are behind the restaurant, according to the Kansas City Star, which reported April 15 that it had opened a few days earlier.
The restaurant took over the former Top Soup Yunnan Noodle space on West 151st Street and expanded into an adjoining former massage business. An April 7 preview in the Johnson County Post put the added space at approximately 1,000 square feet. The Star reported seating for 168.
A Jayhawk roll and a little of everything else
Opening coverage described sushi, sashimi, nigiri and hand rolls, including Philadelphia and Jayhawk rolls. The Jayhawk paired shrimp tempura, cream cheese and avocado with spicy tuna, giving the sushi menu a local nod. The restaurant’s name has one, too: 69 refers to nearby U.S. 69.
General Tso’s chicken, ramen, stir-fries, dumplings and egg rolls filled out the hot-food selection, alongside the seafood and meat dishes described by the Star. There is a fair chance of finding something tempting on the way back from the sushi.
The opening preview also mentioned rotating specials and a separate carryout menu. Adult buffet prices reported at opening were $21.99 for Monday–Thursday lunch and $26.99 for Monday–Thursday dinner, rising to $31.99 Friday through Sunday.
The larger dining room came together as part of the conversion from noodle restaurant to buffet. With two storefronts combined, the Stanley Square space now holds a much wider spread.
