EXPERIENCE
Sushi, hibachi chicken and crab Rangoon belong to the same all-you-can-eat meal at Yamato Steak House of Japan. This Florence restaurant serves its unlimited selection by order, with cooked dishes as well as rolls and sushi coming to the table. There is room in the meal for a spicy tuna roll, a little tempura and a proper plate of steak and rice. The kitchen ranges well beyond a sushi-only occasion.
A delivery robot gives the restaurant its most unexpected bit of theater. It carries food through the dining room, and has become a recognizable part of eating at this Mall Road spot. It is an amusing companion to an otherwise familiar Japanese-American restaurant meal: dumplings, rolls and grilled dishes, with a small technological flourish between the kitchen and the table. Lunch needn’t be solemn just because the menu includes sashimi.
Inside, blue upholstered booths and dark wooden chairs sit against walls patterned with angular lines. Warm globe pendants hang above the tables; a long red divider repeats the geometric decoration. The room’s character is modern and casual, with the colorful walls doing much of the work. It is a setting for a sit-down meal rather than a ceremonial restaurant outing.
The low beige building has a curved frontage, dark trim and red Yamato lettering above the glass entrance. Cherry-blossom decoration appears around the doorway. Behind that straightforward shopping-center exterior is an AYCE menu with an unusually wide range of preparations, from steamed dumplings to deep-fried specialty rolls. The attraction is that specific Japanese-American spread, with the robot supplying a conversation starter of its own.
FOOD
The roll selection covers simple combinations and more elaborate house creations. Avocado, sweet potato and cucumber-avocado rolls sit alongside California rolls and shrimp tempura rolls. Tuna and salmon appear in straightforward rolls, spicy versions and avocado combinations; yellowtail has plain and spicy versions as well. Eel-avocado rolls and spicy crab or spicy snow-crab rolls extend the seafood selection.
The Florence roll takes its name from the restaurant’s hometown. Its filling is spicy tuna, with crab stick and crunch on top, finished with eel sauce and spicy mayonnaise. Da Bomb combines shrimp tempura, avocado and crab stick with spicy mayonnaise. The Boston roll uses cooked shrimp, avocado, cucumber and masago.
Philadelphia rolls bring smoked salmon and cream cheese into the selection. Mount Fuji combines shrimp tempura, cream cheese and avocado inside, with spicy snow crab and eel sauce above. The deep-fried Magic roll uses spicy crab, shrimp and avocado, with eel sauce and spicy mayonnaise. Godzilla pairs spicy salmon with smoked salmon and tempura crunch; the deep-fried Yamato roll brings spicy salmon, cream cheese, avocado and masago together. The Sexy Girl roll layers spicy tuna and tempura crunch inside, with spicy salmon and more crunch on top.
Sushi and sashimi have their own places in the AYCE selection. The sushi choices include salmon, tuna, shrimp, crab meat, tamago and inari. Sashimi lists salmon, tuna, shrimp and crab meat. Tamago is the egg preparation, while inari is the sweetened tofu-pocket style of sushi.
Crab Rangoon is a recurring favorite, with gyoza and shumai among the other appetizers. The gyoza are pan-fried dumplings; shumai are steamed shrimp dumplings. Japanese spring rolls and edamame are also part of the selection. A plate of these smaller dishes is very much within the AYCE offering, alongside its sushi and main-course cooking.
Tempura extends to shrimp and several vegetables: broccoli, sweet potato, zucchini and onion rings. The lightly battered vegetables are listed as individual choices. Chicken katsu adds breaded, fried chicken to the appetizer range, a different preparation from the grilled chicken. Katsu, dumplings and tempura all belong to the unlimited selection.
The hibachi-and-grill choices include chicken, rib-eye steak, shrimp and vegetables. Fried rice, yakisoba and udon are listed separately within the unlimited menu, so the noodles have a place of their own beside the grilled dishes. Soup and salad accompany the package. The exact selection can change; the meal’s enduring shape is sushi, smaller cooked dishes and a substantial grill-and-noodle selection together.
