EXPERIENCE

Yama Kitchen in Pasadena brings Korean barbecue, Japanese sushi and kitchen-prepared dishes into one all-you-can-eat meal. The tabletop grill is central to the setup, but it doesn’t have to command every order. A diner intent on sushi can share the evening with someone working through the barbecue selection, with the self-service side and sauce bar adding another part of the meal. Agreement on dinner can leave room for different appetites.

The dining room gives that hands-on supper a little evening sparkle. Amber-colored booth backs sit beneath globe lights and a reflective ceiling dotted with small lights, creating a more dressed-up setting for a meal that still involves tending your own meat. The booths keep the focus close to the table. It’s a useful match for a restaurant where conversation can carry on between sushi orders and batches from the grill.

Pasadena’s branch celebrated its opening in April 2025 at this East Sam Houston Parkway South address. Its current character is in the everyday combination of served orders and the side bar: a few prepared dishes can arrive while the barbecue is underway, and each person can give more attention to the part of dinner they prefer. The breadth is particularly useful when the group includes both keen grill tenders and willing sushi spectators.

Weekday AYCE lunch has its own selection, while dinner offers a broader menu and an optional Prime upgrade. The ordinary dinner already covers a substantial range; the upgrade is a decision about particular cuts and seafood. With a two-hour dining limit, there’s time to think about the next order as well as the cooking. Dessert is included, so leaving a little space for the finish is a sensible part of the plan.

FOOD

Yama’s Pasadena dinner can begin at the sushi bar even when barbecue is the main attraction. Yellowtail jalapeño, peppercorn tuna, mango salmon and beef tataki are among the prepared starters. Sushi and sashimi include salmon, tuna, yellowtail, octopus, mackerel and surf clam, with eel and tamago adding cooked choices. The sushi orders arrive prepared while meat is cooking at the table.

The regular dinner beef selection includes bulgogi and spicy bulgogi, brisket, New York steak, skirt steak, Yama short rib and beef chuck rib. There’s room to try different cuts without choosing Prime. That optional tier adds beef tongue, American Wagyu, ribeye steak, mini filet and scallop. The menu’s separate Prime list is the distinction to follow; a cut called Prime Brisket also appears among the regular barbecue choices.

Pork belly comes plain, signature-seasoned or spicy, with pork cheek another dinner option. Lettuce and kimchi from the accompaniments make a useful combination with the grilled meat: a wrap brings several parts of dinner into one bite. Chicken bulgogi, teriyaki chicken, basil chicken and miso yaki chicken offer further variety.

Seafood for the grill includes garlic shrimp, Gulf shrimp, spicy calamari and salmon. Zucchini and mushrooms are available alongside the meats, with cheese corn another barbecue-menu accompaniment.

The specialty rolls are decidedly more elaborate than a simple tuna maki. Tiger Eye combines smoked salmon, jalapeño and cream cheese in tempura-fried soy paper, with spicy mayo. Lake Charles brings crawfish, cream cheese and jalapeño into a deep-fried roll with spicy mayo and eel sauce. Shaggy Dog starts with shrimp tempura and avocado, then adds kani, sauces and crunchy flakes.

Kitchen dishes keep dinner from depending entirely on sushi and your own grilling. Coconut shrimp and jalapeño-crab tempura sit alongside crispy calamari, shrimp tempura, grilled mussels and takoyaki. Ramen can be ordered with chicken, beef, shrimp, pork or vegetables, and a tonkotsu, spicy or miso soup base. A bowl brings a warm, kitchen-prepared dish to a meal with plenty of smaller plates.

Tempura Oreo and ice cream give the meal a definite finish. Vanilla, red bean and green tea are the listed flavors, with green-tea ice cream a companion to the fried cookie. These desserts are also included on the weekday lunch menu.
