EXPERIENCE

Tourão in Katy is a Brazilian steakhouse serving unlimited rodízio, with skewered meats carved at the table and a Market Bar generous enough to warrant attention of its own. The full dinner ranges from picanha and ribeye to lamb and shrimp, while selected cuts are cooked when requested. This is a meal for people who enjoy choosing as they go.

The Katy Freeway restaurant is one of two Tourão locations in the Houston area; the other is in Montrose. The brick-lined bar and gaucho mural keep the room relaxed, with black tablecloths that give a gathering a little ceremony. There is room for a birthday dinner and for the much less ceremonial pleasure of deciding that Tuesday calls for picanha.

Personal attention is part of the appeal. The meat service involves small exchanges about cuts and preferences, and a request can bring something beyond the next passing skewer. Some selections take extra cooking time, so this suits a table happy to settle in over dinner. The Market Bar gives everyone something to enjoy between servings, without requiring the whole group to agree on a first course.

Weekday lunch offers a smaller meat selection alongside the market and hot bars. Dinner is the fuller exploration, especially for anyone interested in comparing beef cuts. There is a separate Market Bar meal, too. The table chooses one menu option, so settle that decision together before anyone gets too attached to the prospect of ribeye.

FOOD

The dinner beef selection gives Tourão its strongest food identity. Picanha, labeled “prime top sirloin” on the menu, sits alongside alcatra, fraldinha and ancho ribeye. There is pleasure in having several cuts available in small carved portions: dinner can include the familiar ribeye and a Brazilian steakhouse favorite without requiring a choice between two full steaks. Picanha is a sensible beginning, with fraldinha, or bottom sirloin, worth including in the comparison.

Garlic beef and spicy picanha add seasoning choices to that range of cuts. Coarse-salt seasoning and chimichurri service leave room for both straightforward beef and a more assertive accompaniment. A little sauce can be welcome; so can leaving the next slice alone.

Filet mignon and beef ribs belong to the dinner menu’s request-cooked selections. Mention them to the server early if either is a particular draw, since those preparations take about 10–15 minutes. They broaden the beef choice beyond the cuts already making their way around the room, and give a table interested in steak another reason to spend time over the full dinner.

Lamb picanha and lamb chops are included at dinner, along with shrimp. The request list also includes chicken wings, Parmesan chicken, bacon-wrapped chicken, Brazilian sausage and pork tenderloin. That is a fairly persuasive reason to read beyond the first few beef names. Parmesan and bacon give two chicken preparations a clear distinction, while sausage and tenderloin extend the pork selection. Ask about the cuts that interest you rather than assuming every item will pass the table without a word.

The Fresh Market Bar and Brazilian hot bar are included with the full rodízio. Salads, cheeses and Brazilian dishes make this more than a place to collect a garnish before the meat starts arriving. The selection changes, so a particular salad or hot dish should be a pleasant discovery rather than the sole reason for coming. Cheese bread is another item to look for alongside the carved meats.

The weekday lunch special, served from 11am – 2pm, keeps the bars and a shorter roster that includes picanha, garlic and spicy beef, alcatra, shrimp and lamb picanha, with selected chicken and pork preparations. Fraldinha, ribeye and filet belong to the fuller dinner choice. The Market Bar-only meal allows repeat visits without the rodízio, an option for a table more interested in the salads, cheeses and hot dishes than the skewers.
