EXPERIENCE

The Breakfast Loft puts a Southern-leaning brunch buffet three floors above Franklin Street. Eggs, biscuits and French toast share the meal with catfish, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and collard greens. It is a weekend gathering place where breakfast and a more substantial lunch can belong to the same occasion, without asking the table to choose one direction together.

Saturday and Sunday brunch are the restaurant’s regular public service. That gives the outing a weekend rhythm: friends meeting over breakfast, a birthday group stretching brunch into the afternoon, or a couple making a meal part of a day near the riverfront. The buffet supplies a broad starting point, and kitchen offerings give the restaurant further ways to build on it.

The loft setting has real character. Tall windows line a brick wall beside the buffet, with a polished wood floor and exposed ceiling overhead. The restaurant describes its approach as rustic with an Art Deco touch, and its third-floor location overlooks Detroit’s riverfront area. The building does some of the scene-setting, while the meal keeps the occasion recognizably relaxed and social.

This is a place for brunch as an outing, rather than simply a quick plate before the day starts. The mix of familiar breakfast food and Southern lunch dishes leaves room for different appetites, and the restaurant’s bar adds another possible part of the gathering. Drinks and special additions have their own terms. The main invitation is already generous: get the group together, head upstairs and let the weekend have a proper meal.

FOOD

The Breakfast Loft’s buffet joins a prepared breakfast spread to several substantial Southern dishes. French toast, biscuits and gravy, cheesy eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage and grits form one side of the meal. Catfish, fried chicken, baked macaroni and cheese and collard greens give it a fuller lunch identity. The combination makes the buffet’s character clear before any kitchen additions enter the picture.

French toast starts with thick-cut Texas toast dipped in vanilla-cinnamon custard and finished with powdered sugar. It gives the breakfast selection its sweet bread dish. Biscuits take a savory route: the restaurant describes house-baked buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy seasoned with black pepper. These are two distinct preparations, each with a place beside the simpler egg and meat choices.

Scrambled eggs are served with cheese, while diced potatoes are cooked with bell peppers and onions. Pork bacon and pork sausage links supply the breakfast meats. That group of dishes keeps the familiar cooked breakfast well represented, even for diners whose first interest is something from the lunch side of the buffet. Cheesy grits add another substantial breakfast preparation alongside them.

Catfish is a particularly useful part of the spread. The menu describes a cornmeal coating and Southern seasonings, giving the fish a different identity from the breakfast meats. Fried chicken supplies the other main lunch choice, with its own seasoned coating. Together they make the buffet more than an egg breakfast with a few extra sides, and give the macaroni, greens and grits natural company.

The macaroni and cheese is baked, while the collard greens are slow-simmered with turkey meat. They help explain the Southern direction of the meal: fried fish and chicken, cooked greens and a substantial pasta side all sit comfortably within the same brunch.

The restaurant also offers food from the kitchen, including waffles, pancakes, shrimp and grits and salmon croquettes. Special additions have separate terms; crab legs are explicitly an extra purchase.
