EXPERIENCE

Sushi Twister is a neighborhood Japanese restaurant on Boulder Highway offering made-to-order all-you-can-eat sushi at lunch and dinner. The selection includes nigiri, specialty rolls and hot appetizers, served in a compact dining room near Tropicana Avenue. Its appeal is straightforward: a substantial sushi meal with enough cooked dishes to give each order some variety.

The room has a sushi counter, closely arranged tables and a broad communal table with bench seating. Bottles line a shelf above the counter, while a large Japanese-style mural fills part of the dining-room wall. The counter and kitchen stay close to the seating, giving the space the practical, informal character of a small local restaurant. Table placement makes this a close-quarters meal, especially when several parties are eating at once.

Food is ordered from the table and brought out as it is prepared. A meal can begin with a few pieces of fish over rice, move to a specialty roll, and include tempura or a baked seafood appetizer between orders. The choice happens on the menu; once the plates arrive, the table holds both the sushi and the hot dishes. There is plenty of scope to repeat a favorite without making every round the same.

Lunch allows 45 minutes, and dinner allows 60. That makes the AYCE option a fairly concentrated meal, with small orders more useful than an oversized opening spread. Dinner expands access to marked premium items, including sea urchin and sweet shrimp, with limits on those selections. The setting remains casual throughout: counter seating, familiar Japanese dishes and a broad menu in an east-side storefront.

FOOD

Sushi Twister’s food program combines a broad nigiri selection with elaborate rolls and a substantial group of cooked Japanese appetizers. Fish over rice deserves attention alongside the more heavily dressed rolls. Tuna, salmon and yellowtail provide familiar starting points, while mackerel, surf clam, squid and octopus give a meal more range. Nigiri arrives in two-piece orders, making it possible to move among several kinds without committing the whole meal to one fish.

Garlic tuna and seared tuna offer two variations on the straightforward tuna order. Eel, tamago and inari add cooked or meatless choices to the sushi selection. There is also Twister scallop mix, served over rice, and halibut. These smaller orders suit the format particularly well: a few pieces can be followed by a roll or a hot appetizer, then another choice from the counter.

Dinner brings marked premium selections, including uni and amaebi. Uni supplies the soft, rich sea-urchin option; amaebi is sweet shrimp. These are limited orders rather than endlessly repeatable plates, so the dinner offering should be understood as a broader sushi selection with a few controlled additions. The rest of the meal still comes from the regular nigiri, rolls and appetizers, allowing the premium pieces to sit within a varied spread.

Specialty rolls take a more layered approach. Angry Ninja combines shrimp tempura, spicy crab and cucumber, with additional spicy crab, tempura crumbs and a mixture of Japanese salsa, habanero and eel sauce. It brings crunch, heat and a sweet sauce into the same order. California and spicy tuna rolls give the selection simpler alternatives, particularly when the table already has several richly topped dishes underway.

The cooked rolls are another substantial part of the menu. Japanese Lasagna combines crab stick and avocado with cream cheese, yum yum sauce and eel sauce, then goes into the oven. Its soft filling and creamy topping make it a richer choice than plain fish over rice. Volcano is another baked option, while the deep-fried rolls extend the range toward crisp coatings and heavier fillings. These preparations make room for a meal built largely around cooked sushi.

Hot appetizers deserve their own space in an order. Monkey Ball puts spicy tuna and mushroom inside a tempura ball; Jalapeno Popper fills a battered pepper with spicy tuna and crab. Shrimp tempura and vegetable tempura provide more familiar fried choices. Gyoza, chicken karaage and chicken katsu add dumplings and poultry, so the cooked side of the menu has enough substance to accompany several rounds of sushi.

Baked mussels and Dynamite bring seafood from the kitchen to the table. Dynamite is a baked scallop dish, distinct from the cold scallop sushi, and supplies a warm, richer preparation alongside the nigiri. Agedashi tofu offers another hot appetizer, while garlic edamame, seaweed salad and cucumber salad give the meal smaller vegetable choices. Their simpler forms are useful beside the battered appetizers and generously sauced rolls.

Mochi ice cream provides a small sweet finish. The central choice throughout is how much of the meal to devote to plain sushi, specialty rolls or cooked plates. Sushi Twister supports all three within the same AYCE service. A few two-piece nigiri orders, one substantial roll and selected appetizers can make a varied opening order, leaving room to return to the fish or preparation that best suits the table.
