EXPERIENCE

Red River BBQ & Grill is a family-owned League City barbecue restaurant with two invitations to come back for more: all-you-can-eat ribs on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and a separately offered unlimited salad bar. This is the original Red River location, open since 2002, where post-oak smoking and a broad home-cooking menu give the rib special a proper smokehouse home.

An old tractor stands outside the long porch, with timber rails and posts running across the front of the building. Above them are a metal roof and a stone-clad tower carrying the Red River name. It’s a particularly recognizable introduction to a casual Texas barbecue restaurant. With an actual tractor by the porch, the Texas character is pleasantly literal.

Inside, the restaurant has a large dining room and private banquet rooms, with outdoor dining and a children’s play area adding to its family setting. Regular orders begin at the counter, with a pager used before food is brought to the table. The meal feels informal and practical, with the porch giving the place a more relaxed face than its sizeable dining operation might suggest. It’s easy to understand why a barbecue supper and a family gathering fit the same address.

For the rib special, Tuesday and Saturday are the days to keep in mind. Two sides accompany the ribs, while the salad bar is another meal offered in its own right. The attraction is a particular barbecue dinner within a working local restaurant, with the rest of the kitchen continuing around it. A good reason to put ribs on the calendar.

Greater Houston Destination

FOOD

Ribs are the center of the unlimited barbecue meal. Red River smokes its meats low and slow over Texas post oak, and the rib special keeps the order focused on that part of the kitchen: ribs with two sides, eaten in the restaurant, with more ribs available as part of the special. It’s a straightforward smokehouse dinner.

The two accompaniments can make that rib plate quite a different meal. Mom’s potato salad and coleslaw bring the familiar cold sides, while pinto beans give the barbecue another traditional partner. Cream corn and macaroni and cheese suit someone who wants a creamier accompaniment; fried okra brings a fried vegetable choice. A cold side and beans would keep the plate fairly classic, though macaroni and cheese has a perfectly reasonable claim on one of those two places.

The salad bar is separately sold as all-you-can-eat. Grilled chicken, barbecue chicken, chicken tenders and smoked turkey breast are available as extra-cost additions, with the added meat treated as a finite order. That makes the salad bar a distinct part of Red River’s menu rather than an assumed inclusion with the rib special. The restaurant also offers a gumbo-and-salad-bar combination for someone who wants a bowl alongside the self-service spread.

Among the separately priced appetizers, Texas Hushpuppies give the barbecue kitchen a particularly recognizable small bite. Brisket, barbecue sauce and pepper jack cheese are battered and fried together, putting smoked meat and the cheese’s peppery character into the same appetizer. They’re an extra order to consider with company.

Dessert is an additional order too. Peach and cherry cobblers come with ice cream, while banana pudding offers another familiar Southern finish. Red River lists these among its house-made desserts. A rib dinner can end with cobbler and ice cream if there’s still room; the special itself remains ribs and two sides.
