EXPERIENCE
Ranchero King Buffet has served Mexican buffet meals at its Antoine address since 2009, when Elias Duran opened in the former Steakountry space. The building beside IKEA near the Katy Freeway had a buffet history before the present name went up. Today, the everyday taqueria dishes and weekend stews give that familiar address a distinctly Mexican identity.
The red metal roof and tall RANCHERO KING BUFFET sign make 1010 Antoine Drive easy to recognize. Inside, the broad room accommodates family tables and groups, with booths among the seating choices. Large buffet islands keep the food in view and make the counters the focus of the room. It is a practical setting for a family lunch, with the bakery sweets still to come after the hot dishes.
Antoine has its own longstanding story; Ranchero King’s North Freeway restaurant is a separate branch. The everyday appeal here runs through pastor tacos, tamales and enchiladas, with seafood extending the choice beyond the taqueria. Tortilla heating is part of the service, a small detail that connects the buffet to a taco lunch rather than simply a room full of hot-food pans.
On Saturday and Sunday, barbacoa, menudo, goat birria and cochinita pibil give the outing a more specific purpose. Weekend service begins in the morning, so a gathering can start with a favorite stew rather than wait for dinner. These dishes make the day part of the invitation. The freeway-side location may explain why Antoine is a convenient meeting point; a weekend bowl of menudo gives the meeting a reason of its own.
FOOD
Pastor and carne asada anchor the everyday taqueria selection, with tortilla heating as part of the service. Pastor tacos put seasoned meat at the center of lunch, while carne asada brings grilled beef into the buffet. Steamed tamales and sauced enchiladas have their own pull beside the taco meats, with masa, tortillas and filling all part of the meal.
Southern fried chicken also belongs among the Antoine offerings, with the salad bar providing vegetables beside the meats. It is a familiar addition to a spread otherwise rooted in Mexican everyday favorites. Individual dishes, seafood and sweets vary with the service, while the menu reserves a named group of specialties for Saturday and Sunday. That weekend distinction is the most useful thing to know before choosing a day.
Barbacoa, menudo, birria de chivo and cochinita pibil are those weekend dishes. Menudo offers tripe and broth, with the tripe’s particular bite part of the appeal. The birria is goat, worth knowing if beef birria is the version you usually order. Cochinita pibil brings Yucatecan pork into the selection; it and the barbacoa are natural companions for tortillas, connecting the weekend meats to the everyday taqueria.
Aguachile and ceviche give the seafood side a bright, citrus-focused appeal, with chile adding heat to the aguachile. Grilled or fried mojarra offers a cooked-fish choice alongside them. The restaurant gives weekend seafood particular attention, so Saturday or Sunday is worth considering if fish and shellfish are as much of a draw for you as the stews. The actual selection follows the day’s spread.
Tres leches and churros are familiar temptations at the sweet end of the meal, with gelatinas and fruit offering smaller finishes. A little milk-soaked cake is an inviting prospect after tacos or goat birria. Churros make an equally good argument, especially for anyone who thinks a Mexican lunch should end with something fried and sweet. Take a look before deciding that last taco is essential. Fountain drinks and frescas are purchased separately.
