EXPERIENCE
Pizza-Rio is one of Gatlinburg’s newer all-you-can-eat arrivals, opening its Parkway location in 2024, but the setting has much older bones. The restaurant occupies a 1934 riverside building, where wood surfaces, fireplaces, a partly vaulted ceiling and broad rear windows give the room a warmer character than a conventional pizza shop. The Little Pigeon River runs immediately behind the building, adding a quiet backdrop to a meal built around abundance.
There is no buffet line to navigate. Pizza-Rio uses Brazilian rodízio service: servers circulate with freshly baked pizzas and offer small slices directly at the table. Instead of committing to one pie or loading a plate once, the meal takes place with successive portions of different pizzas, with familiar pizzas followed by Brazilian combinations, then another pass, then something entirely different. Saying yes to a little of everything is both the point and the danger.
Two fixed-price experiences define the format. The Savory & Sweet Way begins with a Caesar or house salad before the pizza rotation; the fuller Brazilian Way adds wings, beef-and-pork meatballs, focaccia and crostini before the same endless savory and dessert pizzas. Small slices make comparison easy and keep the meal exploratory. The room feels polished enough for a vacation dinner without turning formal, while the tableside service keeps the activity coming to you.
The Gatlinburg location is part of the appeal. Pizza-Rio sits directly on the Parkway and remains within an easy stroll of all of the shops and attractions of downtown. That makes this a particularly agreeable place to lean into an AYCE dinner, step back outside, and let Gatlinburg provide the recovery plan. A post-pizza wander through one of the Smokies’ most walkable tourist towns feels like part of the evening.
FOOD
Pizza-Rio’s food identity begins with the dough and the service format. The crust is made from Italian 00 flour, water, olive oil, sea salt and yeast, then fermented for at least 24 hours. Savory pizzas use mozzarella and slow-simmered pomodoro pelati sauce as their common base. From there, the rodízio model turns dinner into a tasting sequence: slices arrive small enough that choosing one does not close the door on the next three.
The Brazilian Way adds a substantial opening act before the pizza begins to circulate. Caesar salad and a house salad with lemon-honey vinaigrette provide the fresh side of the table, followed by seasoned Brazilian wings, beef-and-pork meatballs simmered in marinara, and focaccia with crostini. It is enough food to function as a meal on its own, which makes restraint useful if the goal is to explore the pizza rotation rather than peak before it arrives.
The most distinctive savory pizzas are the ones that make the Brazilian identity unmistakable. Calabresa layers Brazilian calabrese sausage with red onion and black olives. Frango com Catupiry combines shredded chicken with the creamy Brazilian cheese, while Strogonoff de Frango takes chicken stroganoff onto the crust and finishes it with potato sticks. Picanha com Alho uses slices of picanha with garlic-infused olive oil, giving the rodízio one of its clearest links to Brazil’s steakhouse tradition.
Several other combinations reward the willingness to take one slice now and decide later whether it deserves another pass. Portuguesa brings together ham, onion, bell pepper, egg and black olives. Quatro Queijos adds Parmesan, blue cheese and Catupiry to the mozzarella base. Brocolis com Bacon pairs broccoli and bacon with Catupiry, while Bacon Crocante brings crisp bacon together with the same cheese and a topping of crunchy potato sticks.
Pizza-Rio also leaves room for the familiar and the playful. Margherita, pepperoni, cheese, mushroom, Hawaiian and Supreme give cautious eaters easy points of entry. Quatro Carnes piles on beef, pork, chicken and sausage. The Nachos pizza goes in a completely different direction with ground beef, cheddar and Doritos. In a conventional pizzeria, these choices would require a full-pie commitment; here, the rodízio format lets a table move from classic to eccentric one small wedge at a time.
Dessert is not a separate stop so much as the final movement of the same parade. Nutella com Morango pairs Nutella with strawberries. Beijinho uses coconut brigadeiro and coconut flakes, while Doce de Leite com Coco doubles down on Brazilian dulce de leche and coconut. Banoffee combines dulce de leche, banana, cinnamon and whipped cream. Brigadeiro finishes the lineup with the Brazilian chocolate confection and chocolate sprinkles. The switch from savory to sweet can happen without leaving the table.
The result is a meal of competing priorities: sausage after stroganoff, picanha after four-cheese, then coconut or chocolate after the savory rotation has run its course. The per person $29.90 Savory & Sweet Way keeps the experience focused on salad and unlimited pizza; the per person $34.90 Brazilian Way makes the starters part of the feast. Either way, Pizza-Rio’s advantage is the same: variety arrives to the table in manageable slices, making curiosity the most useful appetite.
