EXPERIENCE

Pizza Inn began across from Southern Methodist University in Dallas in 1958, when brothers Joe and R. L. Spillman opened their first restaurant. Franchising followed in 1963, and the first buffet restaurant opened in 1969. Expansion through the Southeast and Southwest turned a Texas pizza parlor into a familiar stop in Southern towns: somewhere to bring the family, settle in after work, or make a lunch break feel like an actual meal.

That history still has a place on the plate. The crackery Original Thin crust and tangy signature sauce anchor a menu with an unusually playful streak. Taco pizza arrived in 1979; Pizzerts joined in 1986; Bacon Cheeseburger became another hallmark in the following decade. This is a pizza buffet comfortable putting lettuce on one slice and chocolate chips on the next, provided you leave the chocolate for the appropriate round.

The buffet restaurants offer informal family dining, with rooms that vary from compact neighborhood stops to larger gathering places. Some have game rooms. Lunch and dinner revolve around hot pizza, salad, pasta, and sweet finishes, with the selection changing by restaurant. There is also a useful invitation for anyone watching for a particular pie: if your favorite pizza is missing from the buffet, ask the staff to make it. Available recipes and requests belong to the local kitchen.

Choose a buffet restaurant when that is the meal you want; delivery/carryout shops and Express outlets serve different occasions. At the table, Pizza Inn’s appeal is the easy company of a hometown pizza meal, with enough mischief in the toppings to keep it interesting. A Pizzert makes a fitting farewell: one more slice, taking dessert seriously in its own cheerful way.

FOOD

Pizza Inn’s buffet is built around pizza, salad, pasta, and dessert, with Original Thin crust providing its most recognizable foundation. The dough is made fresh in buffet restaurants each day, then worked into a crisp, crackery base beneath tangy signature sauce and melted cheese. It gives even a generously topped slice a distinct crunch. Other crusts can appear, including House Pan, with a buttery exterior, soft center, and garlic-brushed edge. Available crusts and buffet selections vary by restaurant.

Pepperoni and cheese establish the familiar end of the pizza line. Pepperoni Max goes further with its pepperoni topping, while Meaty Max gathers Italian sausage, pepperoni, bacon, ham, and beef beneath cheddar and mozzarella. The meat combinations have vegetable counterparts: Veggie Max brings peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, and black olives together. Meaty Max concentrates on savory meats; Veggie Max gives the peppers, mushrooms, and onions room to be the main attraction.

Taco and Bacon Cheeseburger are especially telling expressions of Pizza Inn’s personality. Taco combines seasoned meat and cheese with lettuce and tomatoes, bringing a cool, crisp topping to the hot slice. Bacon Cheeseburger starts with mustard sauce, then adds beef, bacon, onions, cheddar, mozzarella, and pickles. The mustard and pickle combination carries the burger idea beyond the name; this is a pizza with recognizable cookout ambitions.

Chicken specialties change the sauce as well as the toppings. Chicken Fajita combines chicken, peppers, onions, tomatoes, and black olives with two cheeses and picante sauce. Chicken Bacon Ranch pairs chicken and bacon with tomatoes and ranch dressing. Chicken Alfredo takes a creamy direction with onions, mushrooms, olives, and mozzarella; Spinach Alfredo offers spinach and cheese over that same sauce. A requested favorite can give the meal its own small anticipation while the kitchen prepares it.

The salad bar brings a cooler, crunchier plate alongside the pizza. Greens, cut vegetables, dressings, and assorted toppings make it a substantial part of the buffet, with ingredients determined locally. The wider menu’s Garden Salad uses romaine, cucumbers, bell peppers, red onions, tomatoes, and croutons. It makes a cool accompaniment to a mustard-and-pickle cheeseburger slice, or a plate with enough substance to interrupt the pizza procession.

Pasta supplies a forkful between slices. Spaghetti with marinara is an established choice; broader pasta offerings include meat sauce, Alfredo preparations, and macaroni and cheese where available. Garlic breadsticks, garlic rolls with marinara, and garlic cheesebread extend the savory side. Exact pasta and bread inclusions depend on the buffet. Wings, sandwiches, and other ordering-menu extras should be checked separately before counting them into an unlimited meal.

Pizzerts are the signature finish: pizza dough becomes a dessert base for chocolate chip, Bavarian cream, or fruit toppings. Chocolate Chip is the obvious introduction, while a fruit Pizzert gives the final slice another direction. Cinnamon Sticks bring cinnamon dough and icing; Cinnamon Stromboli layers cinnamon and sugar inside flaky crust with a sweet glaze. The dessert selection varies, but the idea is unmistakably Pizza Inn: the last round can still arrive in slices. Save a little room before the cheeseburger pizza convinces you otherwise.
