EXPERIENCE
Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen in Pigeon Forge is where the Family Kitchen idea began, opening at The Island in 2015 and building its version of all-you-can-eat dining around the table rather than a buffet line. The nearly 300-seat dining room sits upstairs above the Paula Deen Store, but it softens once everyone is seated: shared bowls and platters replace trays, food passes around the table, and refills arrive without anyone leaving the conversation.
The room itself makes this location unusually tied to its setting. Broad windows look across The Island Show Fountains, with the 200-foot Great Smoky Mountain Wheel rising just outside the building. Tiered seating preserves long sight lines through a space that otherwise has the proportions of a major tourist restaurant. Warm pendant lights, dark wood, light wall paneling and wrought-iron details keep it closer to a polished country dining room than a conventional buffet hall.
Breakfast is served daily: the table chooses breakfast mains, one meat and two treats, all with unlimited refills. Lunch and dinner shift to two, three or four Down Home Dishes, with three shared sides at lunch and four at dinner. The pleasure is not plate strategy; it is deciding which bowls need another pass and which dish deserves another round.
The Island gives the meal a ready-made before-and-after. The Show Fountains and Great Smoky Mountain Wheel are steps away, with SkyFly: Soar America, The Escape Game and Alcatraz East among the attractions, and shops such as Build-A-Bear, RideMakerz and Pepper Palace mixed into the walkable complex. A heavy Southern meal can therefore become an anchor rather than the whole outing: eat upstairs, browse downstairs, then step directly into a plaza built for strolling.
FOOD
Food at Pigeon Forge follows the same shared-table logic as the room: the table chooses together, platters arrive together, and the selected foods keep coming. Breakfast offers two or three Down Home Dishes, one breakfast meat and two breakfast treats; lunch offers two to four mains with three sides; dinner keeps the same structure but expands the table to four sides. Because refills are unlimited, the best approach is to build combinations rather than chase quantity.
Beef pot roast deserves an early place on the table. The beef is slow-roasted to the point that it pulls apart almost before the fork gets involved, then lands over buttered white rice with its cooking juices. White cheddar mashed potatoes make it richer still. The chicken-fried pork chop is the sharper contrast: boneless pork in a seasoned fried coating, remarkably tender inside, with pan gravy that brings a savory, bell-pepper-forward note. Together they explain much of the appeal—soft, gravy-rich comfort next to crisp fried edges.
BBQ spare ribs push tenderness even further, slow-roasted until the meat is barely interested in the bone and coated in tangy sauce. Best Ever Southern Fried Chicken brings the expected crunch, while chicken and dumplings are rich and doughy: pulled chicken, hand-rolled dumplings and savory gravy made for spooning. Southern fried fish, meatloaf and bourbon-glazed chicken widen the choice, but the strongest tables tend to be built around dishes with clear contrasts between crust, gravy and slow-cooked meat.
The sides are substantial enough to change the meal rather than merely fill space. Broccoli cheese casserole is especially worth protecting a slot for, rich and creamy in the Southern casserole tradition. Fresh candied yams run sweet and buttery, collard greens bring a deeper savory note while keeping some bite, and baked mac and cheese supplies the soft, rich middle ground. White rice and mashed potatoes are practical choices because so many mains arrive with juices or gravy.
Breakfast is the location’s important extra chapter. Country fried steak with white gravy moves the crisp-steak pleasure into the morning, while chicken and waffles gives fried chicken a sweet-savory partner. Ooey Gooey Butter Pancakes, apple-cinnamon French toast and the Everyday Breakfast Casserole broaden the main-dish choices. Add Millionaire Bacon, country ham, sausage or applewood-smoked bacon, then choose two treats such as creamy hashbrown casserole, biscuits and sausage gravy, country fried potatoes or Southwest cheesy grits. It is an unusually complete AYCE breakfast without a buffet line.
Dessert at lunch and dinner is a small per-person add-on, and the signatures remain the obvious finish. Banana pudding layers creamy custard, fresh banana, vanilla wafers and whipped cream into a cool counterpoint to the heavier table. Ooey Gooey Butter Cake is denser, sweeter and unapologetically buttery; seasonal cobbler offers the more traditional baked-fruit route. After several rounds of pot roast and casserole, restraint has already become mostly theoretical.
For the fullest Pigeon Forge version of the experience, pair pot roast, chicken-fried pork chop, spare ribs and fried chicken with broccoli cheese casserole, candied yams, collards and a gravy-catching starch. At breakfast, country fried steak, chicken and waffles, Millionaire Bacon and hashbrown casserole make the same point in a different key. The food works because the table keeps shifting between crisp and tender, sweet and savory, while the refills keep those combinations alive.
