EXPERIENCE

Osaka Sushi Buffet gives a sprawling appetite somewhere inviting to settle. The dining room breaks into smaller pockets, giving the table a more intimate feel between buffet rounds. The booths look made for settling in, while the lighting and decorative touches lend the meal a little occasion. There is room in the mood for conversation as well as the important business of deciding what deserves another helping.

The sushi display is an invitation to browse: cut rolls with different toppings, fish-topped rice and several possible directions for the next plate. So many rolls… A few pieces leave room to explore the Chinese American hot dishes and shellfish, or return to whichever sushi catches your eye. The pleasure is in being able to change your mind halfway through the meal without abandoning the original plan.

The staff-cooked grill adds another pace. Choosing noodles and vegetables makes this part of dinner more personal, and the cooking gives you a pause between the ready-to-take selections. Broccoli, mushrooms and onions can become a dish of your choosing while the sushi remains an easy option for a separate round. The name over the door may give sushi top billing, but noodle enthusiasts have every reason to make themselves at home too.

That combination of a tucked-away table and different ways to fill a plate suits a meal with a little wandering in it. There is satisfaction in returning to a favorite, then curiosity about something passed over earlier. Osaka leaves room for both. And hey, if the evening still needs another round, Myrtle Beach has mini golf. A different sort of scorekeeping, thankfully.

FOOD

Prepared sushi, Chinese American hot dishes and an ingredient-selected grill define Osaka’s unlimited meal. Orange chicken and butter shrimp are two named cooked dishes to notice, with whole shrimp, half-shell mussels and prepared noodles alongside. Sushi receives the billing, but the cooking station deserves attention of its own: noodles and vegetables chosen at the counter become a dish prepared by staff.

The sushi selection includes cut rolls with varied toppings and individual portions of fish-topped rice. Those two preparations give the counter some breadth within the larger buffet. They also put rice at the center of this part of the meal, while the grill and prepared hot foods give noodles their own presence. The sushi is ready for self-service, making it an immediate starting point while a selected grill dish is being cooked.

Orange chicken and butter shrimp take the hot food in contrasting sauce directions. The chicken’s orange emphasis belongs to the citrus side of Chinese American cooking; the butter shrimp points toward a richer, seafood-forward preparation. The contrast is worth noticing without assuming a particular sweetness, heat level or recipe. Poultry and shrimp each get a named dish here, giving the prepared selection more character than a list of meat categories would suggest.

Whole shrimp and mussels in half shells make shellfish another substantial subject. Shrimp appears in both its whole form and the named butter preparation, so those dishes serve different purposes within the seafood selection. Whole shell-on shrimp asks for some peeling; the butter dish offers a separate preparation to consider. Mussels bring another shellfish alongside them. This is the cooked seafood counterpart to the sushi, with distinct ingredients and preparations rather than a succession of interchangeable rolls.

Prepared noodles and grill noodles offer a useful comparison. The ready-made dish is part of the hot buffet; at the grill, noodles can be combined with broccoli, sliced mushrooms and onions for staff to cook. That selection gives vegetables a meaningful role in the cooking station, with the guest deciding the combination. For noodle enthusiasts, the choice concerns preparation as well as ingredients: a dish already on the buffet, or a particular noodle-and-vegetable selection cooked at the counter.

Lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes form part of the salad selection. They offer a simple vegetable accompaniment to the shellfish and sauced hot dishes, while fruit and dessert round out the unlimited food. The assortment varies. Osaka’s most useful food distinctions are already clear in the savory selection: citrus-oriented chicken and butter shrimp, whole shrimp and mussels, rice-centered sushi and noodles prepared in two ways.
