EXPERIENCE

New China Buffet gives its all-you-can-eat meal a surprisingly attractive setting on Highway 17 in Surfside Beach. Leather-look upholstered booths and pendant lights make the dining room feel like somewhere to settle in, while a lovely chandelier hangs over the rows of buffet lines. It is a pleasingly dressed-up place for a meal that might involve teriyaki wings and several trips for noodles.

The advertised 120-plus items make abundance part of the introduction. The hot buffet shares the meal with sushi and cooked-to-order hibachi, with bright signs identifying the sushi and hibachi section. You can spot those alternatives while exploring the ready-to-serve dishes. The signs provide useful landmarks in a meal with this many possibilities; the chandelier supplies rather more glamour than a return trip for dumplings strictly requires.

At lunch, the value appeal is a substantial selection for a moderate buffet price. Steamed shrimp joins the familiar Chinese-American dishes, and sushi, the grill and included desserts give the meal room to grow beyond chicken and rice. For an enthusiast who enjoys sampling across those sections, the attraction is how much one buffet meal can cover. The range is already broad before the evening seafood additions arrive.

Lunch runs 11am – 4pm, with dinner beginning at 4pm. Dinner gives shrimp, scallops and mussels more prominence alongside the chicken and meat dishes. That makes the time of day a useful choice: lunch offers plenty to explore, while supper gives a seafood-minded appetite more to work with. Both belong to the same inviting room, with a booth to return to between the buffet lines and the grill.

FOOD

Chinese-American dishes form the heart of New China’s all-you-can-eat lunch and dinner, with sushi and cooked-to-order hibachi included alongside the self-service spread. The meal can move between familiar chicken dishes, noodles and a grill-cooked plate. Seafood is part of lunch, too, although the dinner selection gives it considerably more room.

General Tso’s chicken, sesame chicken and sweet-and-sour chicken give lunch several familiar chicken preparations to compare. Teriyaki wings add a bone-in choice, while boneless chicken provides another entrée. The range continues beyond chicken with pepper steak and boneless ribs. The wings and ribs are useful to notice if your usual Chinese-American meal tends to begin and end with chicken and rice.

House chow mei fun is worth distinguishing from the lo mein: the rice-noodle dish gives lunch a different noodle choice. Fried rice and chicken chow mein extend that part of the spread. Egg foo young brings an egg-based entrée among the meats, while green beans, mixed vegetables and sautéed fresh mushrooms give the plate cooked accompaniments beyond noodles and rice.

Fried dumplings, dim sum and egg rolls make smaller portions part of the lunch selection. Spring egg rolls offer another choice alongside them. That opens up a meal of dumplings and noodles as readily as a larger chicken-and-rice plate. Steamed shrimp also belongs to the lunch buffet, so a midday seafood helping can sit beside those smaller foods without waiting for the dinner spread.

Dinner brings steamed and fried shrimp, fried scallops and mussels into the seafood selection. The different preparations give shrimp and shellfish several ways onto the plate, with sautéed string beans and house special rice among the accompaniments. Shrimp with lobster sauce supplies another sauced seafood preparation alongside those steamed and fried choices. Individual buffet dishes remain subject to availability.

The evening meat dishes have their own additions. Barbecue ribs and teriyaki chicken on sticks join General Tso’s chicken, pepper steak and egg foo young. Teriyaki wings continue at dinner, and Hunan Delight wings add another option alongside them. Chicken with fresh mushrooms adds a further combination. The wings and skewers make it easy to add a little chicken beside shrimp or mussels.

Sushi and hibachi give the buffet two separate attractions beyond the hot pans. The sushi selection offers ready portions to take alongside the Chinese-American dishes, while hibachi supplies a dish cooked to order at the grill. It is the clearest change in service within the meal: you can combine a prepared buffet plate with something made for you, all within the same unlimited-dining offering.

Soup, salad and desserts round out the buffet. Doughnuts appear in both the lunch and dinner selections, giving the sweets a familiar fried finish after noodles, shrimp or the grill. Fruit and ice cream offer other ways to end the meal, with selections varying. Dessert is included in the buffet, so leaving a little room has a practical reward.
