EXPERIENCE
Nara Sushi at 3401 Kirby Drive serves all-you-can-eat Japanese food through repeated orders, with nigiri and sashimi giving sushi enthusiasts a reason to look beyond an elaborate roll. The meal arrives as individually arranged plates, making the presentation part of its appeal. It is a place to give a few pieces your attention, even when another round is an option.
The storefront makes a cheerful introduction. Large Nara Sushi lettering sits above a broad wall of glass, with branching golden lights visible inside. The open view into the dining room gives the place a warm evening glow. There is sushi-bar seating as well as a smaller private dining room, offering a more secluded setting for a gathering.
The address previously housed Sushi King, and Nara took over a renovated space. The sushi presentation has a similarly considered feel: long boards of nigiri and garnished sashimi platters give individual orders some ceremony. It is a casual dinner with a little visual flourish, rather than a formal tasting-menu occasion.
Nara allows two hours for AYCE, which suits a meal chosen in stages. Give the ordering and conversation a little room, with a small first round before deciding what to repeat. There is also a separately priced à la carte menu for a different kind of sushi supper. Choose the ordering format first; the wider restaurant menu is not a promise of what comes with AYCE.
FOOD
Nara’s dinner AYCE menu gives sushi and sashimi plenty of room alongside specialty rolls and a substantial cooked-food selection. Salmon, tuna and yellowtail are joined by mackerel, octopus, surf clam and scallops, so a fish-focused meal needn’t revolve around the same two choices. Nigiri brings rice into the order, while sashimi lets the fish stand alone. Seared salmon and seared beef are sushi-only choices, offering another direction between rounds of sliced fish.
The specialty rolls provide their own reasons to keep browsing. Dragon combines eel, cucumber and avocado with more avocado and eel sauce on top. Rainbow puts assorted fish over a crab-stick, cucumber and avocado filling. For something different, Cowboy pairs tempura shrimp, avocado and cucumber with pan-seared sirloin. Tokyo takes a fish-led approach: salmon, tuna and avocado beneath yellowtail, jalapeño and ponzu. These are dinner AYCE selections, not diversions into a separate roll menu.
The sushi-bar appetizers also belong to the unlimited dinner. Hamachi Chili and Pepper Tuna Tataki sit alongside Beef Tataki and Seared Salmon Tataki, giving the table smaller prepared dishes to consider before settling into rolls. A couple of these can make an opening round feel like part of the meal in its own right, rather than simply waiting for the first sushi board.
The kitchen gives cooked-food enthusiasts plenty to order. Shrimp tempura, takoyaki, baked green mussels and beef short ribs offer different starting points. Yakitori choices include chicken, beef, shrimp and vegetables, while teriyaki and hibachi dishes broaden the selection further. Pork chashu ramen supplies a noodle option. There’s enough here for a mixed table to enjoy dinner together without everyone having to share the same enthusiasm for raw fish.
Dessert includes vanilla, chocolate, red bean and green tea ice cream, plus tempura banana, Oreos, Twinkies and vanilla ice cream. A scoop is the simpler finish; the fried sweets take things in a more indulgent direction. Choosing between another roll and dessert may be the evening’s final negotiation.
