EXPERIENCE

Mountain Mike’s Pizza began in 1978 in Palo Alto, California, near Stanford University. Its roots are in the sit-down pizza parlor: a place for families, friends, and teams to gather around a pie. That California business has grown into a multistate chain, carrying along a recognizable signature. Its small pepperoni slices curl into cups in the oven, their raised edges becoming crisp above the cheese. A familiar pizza topping gives the brand a face of its own.

The dining rooms make space for more than the pizza. Big-screen televisions put games within view of the table, while arcade games give children something to investigate between slices. Beer and wine are available at many restaurants, and some locations have party rooms. The setting suits a family meal or a team gathering, with conversation, the television, and trips to the games sharing the afternoon. Individual restaurants differ in size and layout, but that casual gathering-place character runs through the chain.

The weekday lunch buffet offers a shorter version of the pizza-parlor visit. At participating restaurants, it serves unlimited pizza and a make-your-own salad bar, generally Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pepperoni, cheese, and a changing selection of specialty pizzas let guests choose by the slice. A first plate need not settle the whole meal; another trip can bring a different topping combination or more of the pizza already enjoyed.

Outside the buffet, Mountain Mike’s 20-inch Mountain-size pizzas give a group a substantial pie to share. School fundraisers, youth sports gatherings, and birthday parties also have a place in the business. The brand’s continuity lives in those ordinary occasions: sitting down together, comparing slices, watching part of a game, and finding a reason to remain at the table.

FOOD

Mountain Mike’s food identity starts with its crispy, curly pepperoni. Natural casings help the small slices form cups as they bake, creating raised edges that crisp above the melted cheese. The pizzas use dough made in-house daily and whole-milk mozzarella, with toppings spread toward the edge. A pepperoni slice makes that approach easy to recognize: little browned cups across the cheese, red sauce underneath, and a golden crust holding the substantial topping layer.

The weekday buffet brings pepperoni, cheese, and assorted specialty pizzas together with a salad bar. Its appeal is the ability to try different slices without choosing a whole pie. The selection changes by restaurant and service; whole-pie orders offer a fuller choice of recipes, including combinations built around meat, vegetables, creamy garlic, barbecue, and tikka masala sauces.

Mountain names give the combination pizzas their own geography. The Everest gathers pepperoni, Italian sausage, salami, linguiça, and beef with mushrooms, olives, bell peppers, and onion. Pikes Peak concentrates on meats, adding ham to that substantial lineup. The McKinley takes a more familiar combination route, pairing pepperoni and Italian sausage with vegetables and diced tomatoes. Linguiça, a Portuguese-style sausage, is one detail worth recognizing among the Everest and Pikes Peak toppings.

Creamy garlic sauce supplies another recognizable branch of the menu. Snowy Alps combines pepperoni and Italian sausage with mushrooms, olives, green onions, and tomatoes over that base. Chicken Club uses grilled chicken, bacon, tomatoes, and green onions. Robbers Roost brings chicken together with mushrooms, olives, and tomatoes, with creamy garlic or red sauce. These pizzas allow the sauce itself to change the character of the slice, alongside the choice of meat.

Spicy Himalayan moves into tikka masala flavors, with marinated chicken, mushrooms, onions, jalapeños, mozzarella, and cilantro over tikka masala sauce. A vegetarian version keeps the vegetables and sauce. Mt. Veggiemore takes a different vegetable direction, using red sauce with mushrooms, olives, bell peppers, artichoke hearts, and fresh tomatoes. Pineapple Chicken Luau combines chicken, bacon, and pineapple over barbecue sauce, giving sweet fruit another place in the specialty selection.

The buffet’s salad bar lets guests assemble their own greens, vegetables, toppings, and dressing. Beyond that spread, individually ordered salads include an antipasto combination with salami, ham, cheeses, pepperoncini, olives, and garbanzo beans. The Greek salad adds feta to vegetables, olives, and garbanzo beans. Prepared salads are separate orders, with their own combinations of meats, cheeses, vegetables, and dressings.

Other orders extend the meal with bone-in or boneless wings, cheese-topped garlic sticks, and Garlic Not-Knots, made from dough folded around garlic, butter, and cheese. Calzones enclose cheese and a choice of toppings; the Half Dome is an open-faced pizza sandwich. These are options beyond the standard pizza-and-salad buffet. Dessert follows the same sharing spirit: cinnamon dessert pizza layers butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon over dough with a dusting of mozzarella and powdered sugar. A chocolate-chip Pizza Cookie and bite-size Mini Churrs provide two other sweet finishes.
