EXPERIENCE
At Leon’s Family Dining in Dearborn, unlimited soup can be the whole reason for the meal. The soup bar is available on its own, with crackers and bread, or alongside a separately priced order from the diner menu. Several rotating soups give a simple lunch more than one direction, with another bowl available when a favorite deserves a second turn.
The Michigan Avenue restaurant has the character of a longstanding family diner. Rows of booths, broad windows and wood dividers fill the dining room, with the soup bar making a convenient meeting point between trips back to the table. It suits a catch-up over lunch as readily as a meal built around one of the kitchen’s individual specials.
Samir Leon opened the Dearborn restaurant in 1991. The family has also made a local tradition of serving a free community meal before Thanksgiving, a part of its story that reaches beyond the usual breakfast, lunch and dinner business. The regular soup bar is a separate everyday offering.
For diners coming from a day around Dearborn or a visit to The Henry Ford, this is a straightforward place to settle into a booth.
FOOD
Chicken noodle, cream of potato and stuffed pepper are among the soups that have appeared at Leon’s Dearborn soup bar. The pots rotate, so the selection on one visit need not match the next. The unlimited meal centers on those soups, with crackers and bread served alongside.
Chicken noodle supplies the familiar broth-and-noodle option. Chicken, noodles and vegetables give it the character of a full bowl rather than a clear starter broth.
Cream of potato offers a thicker alternative, with potato pieces giving the creamy soup some substance. It brings a different texture to the same meal, alongside the broth-based choices.
Stuffed pepper soup turns tomatoes, rice and green peppers into a bowl of its own. Those ingredients give it a different direction from both chicken noodle and cream of potato, making the changing selection more than variations on a single base.
Crackers and bread accompany the standalone soup bar. Hard breadsticks have also been part of the experience, useful for dipping into a thicker soup. Main courses and breakfast dishes belong to their own orders rather than forming an unlimited full-diner buffet.
