EXPERIENCE

Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue has been pairing an all-you-care-to-enjoy Southern supper with musical comedy at Disney’s Fort Wilderness since 1974. At Pioneer Hall, the Pioneer Hall Players sing, dance and trade gloriously corny jokes while dinner comes to the table. The roughly two-hour reservation makes the meal and performance one occasion, with audience participation woven into the entertainment. This is a restaurant where joining in can mean considerably more than passing the cornbread.

Pioneer Hall’s timber interior gives the evening its frontier character. A curtained stage faces the dining floor, and a balcony wraps around above it, bringing the country supper into a room arranged for theater. The two seating levels offer different perspectives, with performers also moving into the audience. Choosing a seating category means choosing a vantage point on the show; the supper follows the same menu across categories.

The service helps hold the whole production together. Servers bring the family-style courses, handle drinks and supply additional helpings on request, with breaks in the entertainment for the main meal. Guests can stay at their table as the evening moves between supper and skits. Fried chicken and pork ribs suit the hall’s country dinner-show identity, and the strawberry shortcake gets a musical introduction of its own. Dessert has evidently negotiated a speaking part.

That combination gives families and groups something to share beyond the serving dishes: familiar songs, slapstick and invitations to clap or sing along. Pioneer Hall is a destination within the campground resort, making supper here a Fort Wilderness outing in its own right. Accessible seating is downstairs, while the balcony is reached by stairs, so the choice of location has a practical side too. The appeal is the whole cheerful proposition: supper together, with live performers making a production of it.

FOOD

Fried chicken and smoked barbecue pork ribs take the lead in Hoop-Dee-Doo’s Southern supper. They share a serving pan, giving the table two substantial mains to pass around while the sides fill out the meal. The chicken comes in breaded, bone-in pieces, a straightforward country-dinner centerpiece. Additional servings are available through your server, so a table with a particular attachment to fried chicken can give it the attention it deserves.

The ribs bring the barbecue half of that pairing, with bone-in pork and barbecue sauce alongside. The sauce can accompany either meat, bringing a barbecue accent to the chicken as well. Together, the two mains give the dinner its cookout character. Both belong to the standard spread, so the chicken enthusiast and the rib enthusiast can happily share a reservation.

Fresh-baked cornbread begins the supper with butter alongside. It’s the sweet style of cornbread, served for sharing at the table. That sweetness makes sense beside the barbecue, so the bread belongs with the mains as readily as it does in the opening spread.

Hoop Salad brings greens, tomatoes, cucumber and cheese with vinaigrette to the opening spread. Creamy coleslaw joins the supper too, with shredded cabbage in a creamy dressing. The slaw is an easy companion for the ribs, carrying the familiar barbecue-and-slaw pairing onto the plate.

Cornbread-crusted macaroni and cheese is part of the regular meal, with a scattering of cornbread crumbs over the creamy pasta. The topping is a small addition rather than a thick layer of cornbread. Mashed potatoes complete the main starch choices; preparations have included skin-on potatoes and small potato pieces. Macaroni and cheese alongside mashed potatoes makes this a supper with very sympathetic views on carbohydrates. Cowboy beans round out the standard sides, adding a bean dish among the pasta, potatoes and salads. They fit the country-supper pairing of barbecue and beans, with cornbread alongside.

A plant-based dinner is available on request, with selections that have included barbecue jackfruit with chipotle barbecue sauce and plant-based Italian sausage. Green beans and roasted potatoes accompany that alternative, along with garden salad, cornbread with plant-based spread and strawberry shortcake. It preserves the shape of a complete supper, including bread and dessert. Specific dietary requests should be noted when booking and discussed with Disney’s trained dietary staff at check-in.

Strawberry shortcake closes the meal with cake, strawberries and whipped cream. The fruit accompanies the cake as both strawberry pieces and a saucy topping, with cream completing the serving. This is the dinner’s defining dessert, and its own musical number gives it an introduction to match. The shortcake gets the spotlight, and the table gets dessert. A perfectly sensible division of theatrical duties.

Soft drinks are included with supper. Guests 21 and older can also have unlimited draft beer, wine and sangria from the included selection, giving the shared meal a choice of drinks to go with it.
