EXPERIENCE

Hikari Sushi & Teppanyaki is a neighborhood Japanese restaurant built around two distinct formats: made-to-order all-you-can-eat sushi and table-side teppanyaki. The AYCE side is the clearer Buffet Authority story. Orders come from a menu rather than a self-service line, so the meal is shaped by repeated rounds of nigiri, rolls, appetizers and, at the premium tier, sashimi. It is an ordering-driven form of abundance rather than a walk-up buffet.

The room is compact rather than sprawling. Sushi service, standard tables and teppanyaki seating share the same restaurant, giving Hikari more variety than a dedicated sushi bar without turning the space into a large-format dining hall. The setting is casual and relaxed, with enough separation between sushi dining and the grill experience that groups can come for different reasons while staying under one roof.

For AYCE, the pace is controlled by ordering. Small plates and two-piece nigiri make it easy to build the meal in stages, while baked and deep-fried rolls take longer and naturally slow the parade of dishes slightly. Several items carry dinner-only or per-person limits, especially some premium nigiri and no-rice rolls. That makes the menu worth reading before ordering heavily.

Hikari’s strongest distinction is straightforward: the unlimited menu reaches well beyond basic rolls. Nigiri includes choices such as ocean trout, salmon belly, uni, sweet shrimp, yuzu yellowtail and salmon roe, while the premium option opens a separate sashimi section. Teppanyaki remains available for diners who want steak, seafood and vegetables from the grill, but the AYCE sushi program is what gives the restaurant its broadest sense of abundance.

FOOD

Hikari’s all-you-can-eat program is centered on sushi made to order, with nigiri providing the clearest view of the menu’s range. Familiar choices such as tuna, salmon, yellowtail, eel and shrimp sit beside ocean trout, salmon belly, scallop, surf clam, squid, salmon roe and seared citrus salmon. The portions arrive in small units, which suits an AYCE meal built from several rounds rather than one large order.

The more distinctive nigiri choices are worth noticing early. Salmon wasabi tops salmon with pickled fresh wasabi; yuzu yellowtail adds a bright citrus profile; spicy nigiri combines fish with crunch, avocado, masago and Hikari’s hot sauce. Dinner adds limited orders of sea urchin and sweet shrimp, and the menu also places limits on ocean trout and salmon belly. These restrictions keep some of the higher-cost pieces from functioning like unlimited staples, but they still widen the experience beyond standard tuna-and-salmon repetition.

Premium AYCE adds the restaurant’s sashimi section. Five-piece orders include salmon, tuna, albacore, Cajun albacore, red snapper, octopus, scallop, squid, surf clam and mackerel, with a mixed sashimi combination also listed. This is the clearest difference between Hikari’s regular and premium experiences: the premium tier lets the meal move away from rice and toward repeated cuts of fish.

Rolls take several forms. Traditional rolls cover California, spicy tuna, yellowtail, eel and cucumber, Philly and salmon skin. Baked rolls include Japanese Lasagna, Volcano and Alaska; deep-fried choices include Cali Crunch, Fried Philly and Sexy Crispy. Specialty rolls become more elaborate, often layering raw fish, soft-shell crab, avocado, jalapeño, masago and house sauces. Citrus Yellowtail keeps the composition relatively clean with spicy yellowtail, cucumber, more yellowtail and yuzu, while Sin City combines albacore inside with tuna, salmon and avocado on top.

The shrimp-tempura section is another substantial branch of the menu. Golden Knight combines shrimp tempura and spicy tuna with spicy crab and seared albacore. Crabby Daddy adds spicy crab over shrimp tempura, avocado and cucumber. Wet Dreams pairs shrimp tempura and cucumber with salmon and avocado. These are heavier choices than nigiri, so they work better as deliberate additions than as the foundation of a long AYCE meal.

Hot appetizers keep the menu from feeling narrowly sushi-driven. Baked green mussels, fresh oysters, chicken karaage, gyoza, takoyaki, shrimp tempura, fried oysters, calamari, agedashi tofu and seafood dynamite all appear on the current ordering menu. No-rice rolls such as Naruto and Rock N Roll provide another fish-forward route at dinner, with cucumber replacing the rice wrapper and per-person limits applying.

Teppanyaki is separate from the AYCE sushi structure but broadens Hikari’s overall offering. Chicken, shrimp, New York steak, filet mignon, salmon or tuna, scallops, Chilean sea bass and lobster can be ordered with soup, salad, vegetables and a choice of rice or noodles. For the unlimited side, though, the best expression of Hikari is the contrast between simple nigiri, premium sashimi and increasingly elaborate cooked or sauced rolls.
