EXPERIENCE

Frisch’s Big Boy at Eastgate is not a giant buffet destination, and that is precisely why it belongs here. The breakfast bar is a Cincinnati ritual in compact form: hot pans, toppings, fruit, and the familiar back-and-forth between table and bar. Frisch’s introduced its Breakfast Bar and Soup, Salad ‘n Fruit Bar in 1982. More than four decades later, Eastgate still runs both formats and still joins the Wednesday Brupper tradition.

The Big Boy name can make the family tree confusing. Big Boy began with Bob Wian in California; Frisch’s became Cincinnati’s regional Big Boy operator after Dave Frisch adopted the double-decker in the 1940s and made tartar sauce part of his version. Shoney’s came from the same broad Big Boy family before leaving the affiliation in 1977. Both Frisch’s and Shoney’s leaned into breakfast bars in the early 1980s, leaving a shared family-dining grammar: booths, coffee, table service and a central self-serve bar.

Eastgate matters more now because so many nearby Frisch’s do not exist anymore. More than 65 locations closed across Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana during the 2024 contraction, including more than half of Greater Cincinnati’s stores. A breakfast bar that once had many more nearby addresses became something regulars might drive farther to find. When Anderson closed, a longtime employee transferred to Eastgate hoping familiar faces would make the trip east. That is the emotional weight this modest buffet carries now: continuity.

The food reinforces it. Frisch’s has added newer toppings around the edges, but the center of the plate remains recognizable: eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy, potatoes, French-toast sweetness and, very Cincinnati, goetta. This is not a buffet about conquering a hundred dishes. It is about returning to a small set of familiar components and remembering that the combinations were always part of the fun.

FOOD

The breakfast bar is built from a compact group of dependable pieces rather than a huge inventory. Eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, sausage gravy and potatoes form the old center, with fruit and sweet breakfast items giving the plate somewhere else to go. The topping deck has grown, but the underlying logic is pleasantly old-fashioned: start with a breakfast plate, then use the bar like a parts bin.

Scrambled eggs are the natural base. Add caramelized mushrooms and cheese sauce and the buffet does the work of an omelet without ever becoming one. Caramelized onions, peppers, cheddar, chorizo, poblano queso, salsa and pico de gallo can push the same eggs in several directions. That freedom is the bar’s quiet advantage: the ingredients are familiar, but a second trip does not have to repeat the first.

The Spicy Spuds invite even simpler engineering. Spoon sausage gravy over them and a side becomes the center of the plate, crisp-edged potatoes softening under peppery gravy. Biscuits can take the same treatment, but they are even better as construction material. Split one, pack it with eggs, bacon and mushrooms, then add cheese sauce or gravy. It becomes a breakfast sandwich assembled from the buffet rather than ordered from the kitchen.

Then there is goetta. The oat-bound pork-and-beef breakfast meat is one of Cincinnati’s clearest regional signatures, browned until the outside develops a crisp edge. It gives Frisch’s a local accent that a generic national breakfast buffet cannot copy. Shoney’s carries Southern markers such as grits; Frisch’s puts Cincinnati on the bar with goetta. Bacon and sausage may be universal, but a slice of goetta immediately changes the geography of the plate.

The sweet side is deliberately uncomplicated. French toast sticks are ready for pancake syrup and fruit topping, which makes them easy to save for the end and treat almost like breakfast dessert. Churros can also live in that same sweet corner. The pleasure is less about a full bakery spread than about changing texture and temperature after eggs, gravy and meat: something crisp, warm, syrupy and sweet before one last cup of coffee.

Fresh fruit provides the reset between heavier combinations, while cucumber, tomato, romaine, roasted corn, black beans and other cold-bar ingredients widen the possibilities. That crossover also points toward the bar’s second shift. After breakfast, Eastgate returns to Frisch’s unlimited Soup, Salad ‘n Fruit Bar format, the same family-dining idea translated from eggs and gravy to greens, vegetables, fruit and soup.

That continuity is the food story. Eggs with mushrooms and cheese sauce. Spuds under sausage gravy. A biscuit stuffed with eggs, bacon and mushrooms. Goetta beside almost anything. French toast sticks with syrup and fruit topping held back for the end. The Eastgate bar is not about seeing how many foods can fit on one buffet. It is about seeing how many breakfasts can come from the same modest one.
