EXPERIENCE
Firepot is an all-you-can-eat seafood and hot-pot restaurant at The Fountains in Stafford, with Chinese buffet dishes, dim sum and sushi alongside the ingredients you cook at the table. The meal has a rather memorable setting: a huge illuminated globe hangs above the room inside an orange ring. Dinner beneath it has a little spectacle built in, even before anyone brings back a plate.
The glow continues through orange booths and amber-lit columns, giving the large room a lively setting for a group meal. The food helps with that, too. Some diners can concentrate on broth and seafood while others visit the prepared-food stations, with milk tea and dessert still to come. It is the sort of outing to suggest when friends want to make dinner an activity and have several things they’d like to try.
Hot-pot diners choose from mild-to-spicy broths and mix dipping sauces at a self-serve bar. Broth and dipping-sauce choices let diners adjust the heat to taste. Garlic, cilantro, scallions and chili oil offer plenty of scope for a personal sauce. There is something sociable about a meal where everyone is cooking, even if nobody has agreed on the same soup.
Dinner includes hot pot, while weekday lunch can involve a supplement. The evening offering also brings Peking duck and a seafood platter with its own portion allowance, so it deserves consideration if those are the main draw. Firepot allows two hours for dining and offers free parking at its Fountain Lake Drive address. Leave time to look beyond the pot, particularly if the milk-tea bar or chocolate fountain has already caught someone’s attention.
FOOD
Dinner at Firepot puts hot pot alongside a Chinese buffet, with seafood, sushi and dim sum giving a table plenty to explore between trips to the broth. The hot-pot meal includes repeat orders of meat, seafood, vegetables and noodles. Peking duck and dim sum are good reasons to leave the pot for a moment and see what is ready to eat.
There are six broth bases, ranging from mild to spicy, with heat levels marked on the restaurant’s menu. A mild broth can be a sensible starting point for someone who wants to add chili through a dipping sauce, while a spicy pot will suit a diner who wants heat in the soup itself. The cooking ingredients include mushrooms, tofu and noodles alongside meat and seafood.
The sauce bar has eight dipping sauces, plus garlic, cilantro, scallions and chili oil. Fresh herbs and garlic are useful with both meat and seafood, and a little chili oil can be added without making the whole pot hotter.
Dinner also includes a seafood-platter benefit, with lobster, shell-on shrimp, clams and scallops appearing in the restaurant’s seafood presentation. The platter has its own serving allowance, so check the current selection and portion when ordering; it is separate from the unlimited hot-pot refills.
On the buffet, General Tso’s chicken, baked mussels and dim sum give you ready-to-eat dishes between batches from the pot. If duck is a favorite, give it some attention before filling up on noodles. Sushi rolls and nigiri add another prepared-food stop, useful for diners who would rather spend more of the meal enjoying their plates than watching the broth.
The milk-tea bar, ice-cream machine and chocolate fountain give dessert a proper place in the outing. Milk tea can accompany the savory food, while ice cream offers an easy finish after the hot pot. A chocolate fountain may require a little more room in the plan. With duck, dim sum and seafood already under consideration, it is worth remembering that the sweet stations are there before the table declares dinner complete.
