EXPERIENCE

CK Kitchen gives an unlimited sushi meal a surprisingly broad set of companions. Ramen, Korean fried chicken and dishes from the hot kitchen sit alongside the rolls and nigiri on its made-to-order menu. At this Covington restaurant, a person can be quite serious about sushi while the friend across the table is equally serious about another order of wings.

The Main Street dining room is compact and informal, with a Japanese landscape mural spreading across the back wall. Mount Fuji, a pagoda and pink foliage supply a little scenery while the meal stays at table level. The street-facing windows and an outdoor seating area connect it to the surrounding neighborhood; this is a place to sit down over dinner, with the kitchen preparing the rounds.

Its range is especially useful for mixed appetites. Someone interested in simple fish-and-rice pieces can keep things straightforward, while another diner chooses a deep-fried roll, a spicy noodle dish or a bowl of broth. The food arrives by order, so the meal develops through a succession of choices instead of one large trip around a self-service counter. Small orders leave room to find out which direction deserves another turn.

The AYCE program runs seven days a week and includes a two-hour dining window. Drinks are separate. CK’s appeal is the breadth of a sushi restaurant and a hot kitchen in one sitting: plenty to discuss, and no need to make every plate look alike.

FOOD

The sushi selection makes room for both simple pieces and elaborately dressed rolls. Nigiri comes one piece to an order, with salmon, tuna and yellowtail among the raw choices. Cooked shrimp, eel, sweet egg omelet and tofu skin give that part of the menu other possibilities.

Special raw rolls add more ingredients around the fish. The Rainbow Roll starts with crabmeat and avocado, then adds tuna, salmon and yellowtail on top. The Tokyo Roll combines spicy salmon, cream cheese and jalapeño with more salmon and spicy mayonnaise. The Bengals Roll takes spicy tuna and crunch beneath a salmon topping.

Cooked and deep-fried rolls provide a separate selection. The Sunday Morning Roll combines salmon, cream cheese and avocado with spicy mayonnaise and eel sauce. American Dream uses crabmeat, avocado and cream cheese, while the shrimp tempura and chicken tempura rolls offer simpler fried fillings. Avocado, cucumber and sweet potato rolls give the rice-and-seaweed side of dinner some meatless choices too.

Korean fried chicken wings arrive in small orders with a choice of Original Olive, Soy Garlic, Spicy or Swicy, the menu’s sweet-and-spicy option. Korean BanBan cauliflower takes tempura cauliflower into sweet chili sauce. Elsewhere, the kitchen wanders cheerfully into street-corn nachos, with charred corn, chipotle and lime cremas, cilantro and cotija cheese.

The smaller starters give a round some useful variety. Vegetable or chicken gyoza, fried shrimp shumai and crab Rangoon offer several filled bites, while a shrimp tempura set combines shrimp and vegetables. Jalapeño Bombs put spicy tuna and cream cheese inside battered, deep-fried peppers, with eel sauce and spicy mayonnaise. Edamame and cucumber sunomono provide simpler choices; the cucumber comes with ponzu dressing. Spicy kani salad and seaweed salad are further chilled options alongside the hot starters.

Ramen is a significant part of the unlimited offering, with Original Tonkotsu, Shoyu Tonkotsu and Miso, each also offered in a spicy version. The protein choice is barbecue pork or grilled chicken. It gives a diner who prefers a bowl of noodles a proper meal within the AYCE selection. Tokyo Noodles take another approach, combining ramen noodles with carrots, cabbage, green onion, grilled chicken and spicy sauce.

The hot kitchen also includes chicken katsu, hibachi selections, fried rice and crispy chicken, fish or shrimp tacos. There is enough cooked food here for sushi to be one part of dinner rather than its sole purpose. The menu lists ice cream and fried cheesecake for a sweet finish. Drinks remain a separate order, including the milk teas and fruit drinks advertised by the restaurant.
