EXPERIENCE

A monorail passing above the buffet is a fairly persuasive way to announce that breakfast has reached Walt Disney World. Chef Mickey’s occupies the fourth-floor Grand Canyon Concourse at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, where an American all-you-care-to-enjoy breakfast or dinner comes with Mickey Mouse and his friends. The restaurant shares the hotel’s towering atrium, so the resort itself becomes part of the meal: balconies overhead, Mary Blair’s Grand Canyon mural nearby, and that unmistakable train inside the building.

The curved serving counters and brightly colored panels give the place a cheerful, cartoonish character. A circular canopy carries the Chef Mickey’s name above the buffet, while the dining areas spread into tables and booths around the concourse. It’s a busy, sociable setting, with music and character greetings adding to the sound of a large family restaurant. There’s plenty to catch a Disney enthusiast’s eye; particular views depend on where you sit.

Mickey and his pals move through the dining rooms, bringing greetings and photo opportunities to the meal. Their culinary outfits make the restaurant’s name feel quite literal. Chef hats are doing some serious public relations here. The appeal reaches beyond small children: a table of adults can enjoy the same familiar company, with the buffet giving different appetites room to coexist. An autographed keepsake card is included for each table, a small souvenir that survives considerably longer than a waffle.

Breakfast favors the sweet-and-savory American morning spread; dinner expands into carved meat, seafood and character-themed desserts. Both leave the meal’s social attraction intact. For the AYCE enthusiast who enjoys Disney’s characters as much as the prospect of another helping, Chef Mickey’s puts those pleasures together in one conspicuously Disney room.

FOOD

Breakfast gives Mickey-shaped waffles a proper supporting cast. Scrambled eggs, smoked bacon, sliced honey ham and corned beef hash cover the familiar savory ground, while sweet and savory breads widen the morning spread. The waffles supply the unmistakable Disney flourish, but the hash gives a meat-and-eggs appetite something more substantial to consider. Selections rotate at both meals, including the specialty sweets, salads and desserts described below.

Buttermilk biscuits with gravy are among the rotating breakfast signatures, along with ham-and-cheese and vegetable omelets. Warm cinnamon rolls deserve their own pause. Cream cheese icing and a caramel drizzle turn the rolled cinnamon bread into a rather committed sweet breakfast. A pastry that has already invited caramel along clearly isn’t feeling shy.

Croissant beignets take a different route: croissant dough is fried, then dusted with cinnamon sugar, with fruit sauces available alongside. Their layered construction distinguishes them from a plain doughnut or a conventional beignet. French toast supplies another sweet forkful, with a turtle-style version adding crushed nuts and chocolate sauce. These are worth considering as individual breakfast treats, rather than letting the waffle’s famous ears monopolize the plate.

Dinner starts with a useful cold selection. Peel-and-eat shrimp brings seafood to the opening plate, with cocktail sauce for dipping. Watermelon salad combines the fruit with cucumber, red onion and feta, giving the salad counter a specific summery choice beyond tossed greens. Four-cheese focaccia adds a bread option with more going on than a plain roll.

NY strip loin gives the dinner buffet its beef centerpiece. Barbecue pork ribs and teriyaki salmon widen the main-course choices, with the salmon offering a fish entrée alongside the meat. Barbecue chicken comes coated in a sweet barbecue sauce, extending the comfort-food selection to poultry. Shrimp scampi brings a second shrimp preparation to the hot selection, so dinner offers both chilled shrimp for dipping and a hot shrimp dish.

Butternut squash ravioli is the filled-pasta choice to notice among the dinner sides. The wider pasta selection can include baked rigatoni and penne with fire-roasted tomatoes and grilled artichokes, giving a pasta-focused plate several distinct preparations to work with. Chicken pot pie adds another comfort-food direction, while grilled asparagus supplies a vegetable alongside those heavier dishes. There’s enough substance here for dinner to extend beyond a carving plate.

The children’s selection is worth a look for its mini corn dogs: small cornmeal-coated dogs with honey mustard or ketchup alongside. Cheese pizza and chicken tenders provide familiar alternatives, and macaroni and cheese crosses naturally into the broader comfort-food spread. The mini corn dog is mercifully uncomplicated.

Dessert carries the character theme into actual pastry construction. The Mickey tart combines chocolate ganache with a chocolate-cookie crust; Minnie’s raspberry cheesecake also sits on a chocolate base. Donald’s cream puff holds lemon cream, offering a different filling from the chocolate-heavy choices. The faces may draw the eye, but the fillings help you choose. Ordinary nonalcoholic beverages are included; specialty drinks and alcohol are separate.
