Bubba’s Fish Shack works because it actually feels like the name on the sign. Set just across Ocean Boulevard from the Surfside Beach Pier, it is weathered, elevated, a little divey, and unmistakably coastal rather than polished into a beach-theme simulation. The climb up, the porch, the old fishing-boat décor, nets, paper-covered tables and casual bar all belong to the same vocabulary: this is the sort of place where flip-flops make more sense than reservations.

The setting carries real local mileage. Bubba’s dates to the early 2000s, when the locally based Divine Dining Group added the concept to its Grand Strand restaurant family. The relationship to Surfside is more than address. After Hurricane Matthew destroyed the 1993 Surfside Beach Pier in 2016, Bubba’s kept a surviving section of that pier on display. With the rebuilt pier directly across the street, the restaurant now holds a literal fragment of an earlier Surfside inside a room that already feels pleasantly lived-in.

The best seats lean into that geography. Front-porch tables catch the salt air and an ocean view, while porch swings downstairs turn a dinner wait into part of the evening. Inside, the room is rustic and close-knit rather than grand, with the cluttered maritime character of a place that has accumulated personality instead of installing it all at once. The result feels closer to an old South Carolina beach-town habit than a Myrtle Beach attraction.

That helps explain the return-visitor tradition around Bubba’s. Families fold it into yearly beach trips because the restaurant is uncomplicated: come off the beach, get comfortable, order fried seafood, and stay casual. For Buffet Authority, the all-you-can-eat fish is the hook, but the reason to choose Bubba’s over a more elaborate seafood operation is the room around it. Plenty of restaurants can fry catfish. Far fewer still feel this convincingly like a weathered fish shack across from a pier.
