Sumo Sushi & Grill Plans November 3 Eugene Opening in Former Shari’s

The Pacific Northwest AYCE Japanese chain is preparing its first Eugene restaurant in Santa Clara.

The former Shari’s in Eugene’s Santa Clara neighborhood has a very different kind of menu on the way. Sumo Sushi & Grill, a Pacific Northwest all-you-can-eat Japanese restaurant chain, is targeting Tuesday, November 3, for its first Eugene opening at 35 Division Avenue. A representative supplied that date to Lookout Eugene-Springfield, which reported months of renovations at the former diner.

For local diners, the change is substantial. Shari’s was the kind of place associated with breakfast plates and pies; Sumo is built around rounds of made-to-order sushi and other Japanese dishes. This is not a long buffet line where rolls have been sitting under lights. The chain describes its format as food prepared when ordered, with the ability to return for more within its AYCE service.

The sushi roster is not limited to the familiar rolls. Lookout’s preview names hand rolls, sashimi, classic rolls and specialty rolls, alongside ramen and hot plates such as chicken katsu, tofu curry and grilled short ribs. Sumo’s broader company menu also includes nigiri, grilled items, noodles and other cooked dishes. That balance will matter to parties where one person wants sashimi and somebody else is already thinking about the curry.

Sumo has been building a network across the Northwest, with restaurants in the Seattle and Tacoma areas as well as Portland, Salem and other Washington and Oregon cities. On its official website, the company promotes mobile ordering by QR code, made-to-order dishes and robot food delivery as features of the brand. Eugene-specific service details have not been announced, so a robot appearance at 35 Division Avenue should not be treated as part of the opening promise.

The former Shari’s location supplies some local context to the expansion. Sumo is moving into an existing restaurant site rather than announcing a new standalone building, and the renovation period suggests a meaningful dining-room conversion. The chain’s first Eugene opening also brings another regional AYCE choice to the northern end of the city.

Two practical pieces have yet to surface: Eugene’s actual lunch and dinner pricing, and its confirmed daily hours. Sumo publishes different prices for established locations, so importing a price from Portland or Tacoma would be premature. November 3 is a scheduled opening date, not a report that the doors have already opened.

Still, the outline is clear enough for local sushi regulars to start watching Division Avenue: a familiar former pie stop is preparing to become a place where ordering another plate of nigiri is very much part of the plan.
