EXPERIENCE
Jade Buffet is a longstanding Princeton Pike address for a Chinese-American meal with a generous seafood selection. Fish and shellfish give the buffet much of its appeal, while familiar hot dishes and a separate fruit-and-salad counter keep the meal broader than a seafood outing alone. It is a place to sit down for lunch or dinner, in the old-fashioned Chinese-buffet tradition.
The restaurant has been serving buffet meals at this address since at least 2011. That long presence is reflected in a setting with an established look of its own, from the green-and-red entrance canopy to the teal-edged circular food counter inside.
There is a pleasing lack of formality to the format. Hot entrees and fried appetizers occupy the main buffet, with fruit, salad ingredients and desserts giving the meal a cold-food side as well. Jade suits the familiar sit-down Chinese-American lunch as much as a visit centered on shellfish.
Crab legs need a little advance thought. They are part of Jade’s seafood repertoire, along with crawfish, but availability and current buffet terms should be checked before making them the reason for the trip. The broader spread still offers a Chinese-American meal without making crab legs a requirement.
FOOD
Seafood is a substantial part of the meal at Jade, with coconut shrimp and fish among the hot dishes. Mussels and crawfish broaden the selection beyond the shrimp preparations familiar from many Chinese-American buffets. Crab legs can be part of the meal too, although availability and current terms should be checked before making them the purpose of the visit.
The shellfish gives this buffet much of its character. Whole crawfish and crab legs make for a more hands-on meal, while the prepared fish and shrimp dishes are ready to eat without the shelling. There is room here for a seafood-focused lunch or dinner without treating every visit as a crab-leg occasion.
Chicken with broccoli and sweet-and-sour chicken are among the Chinese-American hot dishes. Chicken teriyaki extends the poultry selection, keeping it from depending entirely on the sweet-and-sour preparation. These familiar dishes sit alongside the shellfish, so seafood remains an important part of a broader Chinese buffet rather than the whole proposition.
Egg rolls and spring rolls are part of the appetizer selection, with crab Rangoon among the other fried foods. The rolls and filled wontons belong to the buffet meal, and offer a familiar opening alongside the larger hot dishes.
A separate cold counter gives fruit and salad a substantial place in the spread. Pineapple pieces and grapes appear with other cut fruit, while lettuce and dressings occupy their own pans. It is a fuller cold selection than a single bowl of fruit tucked beside the desserts, and a useful counterpoint to the seafood and sauced hot dishes.
Banana pudding and coconut cookies are among the desserts, with fortune cookies available as well. The pudding brings an American favorite to the sweet selection.
