EXPERIENCE

Gulzar’s Indian Cuisine is a family restaurant in downtown Dayton, with owners Deepika and Jay Singh and a kitchen led by Jay and his father, Paramjeet. Its cooking draws mainly on northern India, and the daily lunch buffet is a regular part of the restaurant’s life. The family’s move into a larger North Patterson Boulevard space gave that lunch a much more expansive setting.

In May 2025, Gulzar’s moved next door from 217 to 219 North Patterson Boulevard, into the former Flyboy’s Deli. Seating grew from 73 to 168, with a larger buffet and room for private gatherings. It was a substantial expansion without leaving the downtown block where the restaurant was already established.

The new room is exuberant with color. Teal and magenta seating, patterned floors and a curtain of golden beads give it a celebratory character. Even the buffet has its own decorated canopy, with turquoise pierced trim edged in orange against a purple wall.

Lunch brings the kitchen’s changing selection of curries and vegetable dishes, with fresh naan alongside. Chicken tikka masala is a familiar part of that offering, while spinach, paneer, chickpeas and coconut cabbage show the attention given to vegetable cooking. The expanded buffet also gained an ice-cream cooler. Gulzar’s has space for a private gathering as well as an ordinary downtown lunch, with the family kitchen connecting both occasions.

FOOD

Chicken tikka masala is one of the familiar dishes in Gulzar’s changing lunch buffet. The kitchen combines marinated chicken with tomato, onion, garlic and butter, giving the sauce its savory tomato-and-aromatic base. Butter enriches the preparation, with naan available alongside the curry. It is part of a lunch spread that also gives substantial attention to greens, paneer and vegetable cooking.

Saag is the leafy-green preparation, made here with spinach, onion, garlic, ginger and tomato. Saag is a broader name for cooked greens; spinach is Gulzar’s choice for this version. Paneer preparations belong to the changing selection as well. Paneer is an Indian fresh cheese that keeps its shape when cooked, so the pieces remain a substantial component of a curry.

Coconut cabbage is a particular vegetable dish to know at Gulzar’s. Cabbage and coconut are cooked with cumin, ginger, garlic and turmeric. The coconut contributes a gently sweet, nutty element, with cumin and the other seasonings giving the cabbage a distinctly spiced preparation.

Chickpeas are also part of the buffet’s vegetable selection, accompanied by raw vegetables and fruit. The raw accompaniments give that meal a cold side alongside the cooked selection.

Naan, the leavened flour flatbread, has an important place with the curries. Gulzar’s bakes it in the clay oven, the tandoor. With tomato-based chicken curry, spinach and the other sauces in the spread, it is an integral accompaniment to the Indian meal. For more heat, ask the staff about chili powder at the table.

An ice-cream cooler is part of the expanded buffet setting, adding a cold sweet after the curries and bread. Tea is also available alongside lunch.
