EXPERIENCE

Golden Bowl’s owners describe a neighborly ambition: open a buffet, make friends and keep learning. Their Troy restaurant gives that introduction a fitting home, with peanut-butter chicken, rose-folded Rangoon and a modest Chinese-American spread on South Weston Road.

The owners also operate China Garden in Piqua, connecting Golden Bowl with another nearby community. The Troy address occupies a plaza storefront framed by brick columns, with a bowl-shaped emblem tucked between the words of its sign. Inside, the meal follows a familiar rhythm of hot buffet dishes, a cold selection and dessert. Takeout is another part of the business.

There is a distinctly American comfort-food streak here. Macaroni and cheese, French fries and pasta salad share the offering with shrimp, chicken and wontons. That combination gives the restaurant its slightly old-fashioned small-town character. Even the salad assortment, with its halved eggs, feels at home in the picture.

Lunch buffet service runs daily from 11am – 3pm, followed by dinner from 3pm – 9pm. The early changeover is useful to know if your lunch runs late. Golden Bowl keeps its ambitions close to the neighborhood: a manageable buffet, familiar dishes and owners who put making friends into their own account of the business.

FOOD

Peanut-butter chicken is the place to begin Golden Bowl’s food story: Tender chicken coated in peanut-butter sauce, served among the hot dishes. Bourbon chicken, mushroom chicken and sweet-and-spicy chicken broaden that selection, with rice and noodles alongside. The buffet changes through service, but these chicken preparations give a good sense of its Chinese-American cooking.

Coconut shrimp and butter shrimp are two of the seafood dishes to know. Brown sauce has its own place in the meal, including as an accompaniment to the butter shrimp. The shrimp dishes sit within the main hot-food selection, alongside the chicken preparations and vegetables, rather than constituting a separate seafood menu.

The crab Rangoon has a lovely little visual flourish: its wrapper is folded into a rose-like form. Spring rolls and wonton soup also belong to the offering. The Rangoon’s shape is worth a look before the first bite; it is one of Golden Bowl’s most recognizable small details.

Macaroni and cheese and French fries bring the American comfort-food side into full view. Stuffed mushrooms have also been part of the buffet, while mushroom chicken puts the same ingredient into an entree. The macaroni and fries are familiar companions to the chicken tenders, even in a meal that also includes wontons and shrimp.

The cold counter carries pasta salad, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and halved eggs. Together they make a traditional buffet salad assortment, with a prepared pasta dish as well as the individual salad ingredients. Ice cream is among the desserts.
