EXPERIENCE

Bombay Magic is a vegetarian Indian restaurant with a Mumbai street-food identity, serving Florence from its US-42 storefront. The name looks back to Bombay, Mumbai’s former name, and the wider menu carries that city’s casual, snack-loving spirit into street foods, wraps and fusion dishes. A recurring lunch buffet brings a more substantial Indian meal into the same kitchen.

The menu’s playfulness is quite literal, with category names such as “Dosa (Crepe) Cravings” and “Doughlious Pizza.” Mumbai-style snacks, including vada pav and dahi puri, belong to the individually ordered side of the restaurant. Gujarati sweet-and-sour dal also appears on the regular menu. Those details give a sense of a vegetarian kitchen interested in both regional Indian cooking and modern casual meals. Falooda and milkshakes also have their own place on the menu, extending the snack-and-sweets side of the restaurant beyond its curries and street-food meals.

The storefront is straightforward: red Bombay Magic lettering above a green Indian Vegetarian Cuisine sign, with dark glass beneath the cream-colored frontage. It sits in a shopping-center setting, with a low hedge across the front. Paper plates and plastic utensils keep the buffet informal, in keeping with a restaurant whose wider identity is rooted in street food.

At lunch, the buffet turns toward curries, lentils, cooked vegetables and Indian breads, with rice and sweets completing the meal. Its vegetarian identity extends across the restaurant. The selection changes, giving the buffet its own place within a Florence restaurant with a distinctly Mumbai-flavored personality.

FOOD

Bombay Magic’s vegetarian buffet brings together chana masala, saag paneer and malai kofta, alongside dahl and cooked vegetables. These preparations give chickpeas, leafy greens, fresh cheese and vegetarian kofta a place in a meal with rice, breads and Indian sweets. The selection changes, so these are examples of the buffet’s range rather than a fixed daily menu.

Chana masala is the whole-chickpea curry. Chana means chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, with their characteristic nutty flavor. In the classic North Indian preparation, they cook in a spiced masala, commonly based on onions and tomatoes.

Saag paneer combines cooked leafy greens with pieces of paneer. The cheese is a fresh, unaged Indian style, traditionally made by setting milk into curds and pressing them together. It holds its shape during cooking and has a mild, milky character against the greens. Saag belongs to a broad Indian tradition of cooked leafy-green dishes, with paneer bringing the cheese into this preparation.

Malai kofta is the shaped-dumpling preparation in a creamy-style sauce. Kofta is a broad family of dishes made from ingredients formed into balls or ovals, with vegetarian versions taking their own place in Indian cooking. Malai points toward the creamy character of the dish.

Dahl adds the everyday Indian tradition of cooked pulses. The word, also written dal, can refer both to the pulses and to the prepared dish. A dry-style mixed-vegetable preparation includes cauliflower florets and pieces of green pepper. A reddish seasoning coating and browned edges give the cooked vegetables a distinctive appearance, with little surrounding gravy.

The breads include small puffed fried rounds and herb-flecked flatbread wedges. The flatbreads have browned blisters across their surfaces and scattered green herbs. White rice and colorful crisp accompaniments also appear on the counter, alongside the curries and cooked vegetables.

Gulab jamun is the Indian sweet to know by name here. Small browned rounds sit in syrup, giving the dessert its characteristic saturated richness. Traditionally made from a milk-based dough that is fried before soaking, gulab jamun belongs to India’s milk-sweet tradition. The syrup penetrates the fried rounds, producing the moist, dense character associated with the sweet.
