EXPERIENCE

Friday gets a head start on the weekend at Namaste Flavours. The Farmington restaurant offers its lunch buffet Friday through Sunday, bringing a changing Indian spread to Grand River Avenue. Puri, rice dishes, vegetables and curries make this an outing for several small tastes, with the freedom to return to whatever earns a place on the next plate.

The dining room is straightforward and informal. Warm yellow walls, red booth seating and a low red partition around the serving area give it a cheerful, practical character. Tables sit close to the counter, so the buffet remains part of the room rather than a separate grand hall. It’s a neighborhood restaurant setting, suited to a lunch that can feel sociable without becoming an elaborate occasion.

That informality works well for a table with different appetites. One person can build lunch around biryani and a fried starter, while another gives the vegetable dishes and breads more attention. Nobody needs to settle the whole meal with one entree order. There’s a particular usefulness to that on a weekend, when agreeing where to eat can already have involved enough discussion.

Namaste also serves individually ordered meals, takeaway and catering, but the buffet has its own selection during lunch service. Treat it as a chance to explore what’s out that day, rather than as the entire restaurant menu made unlimited. Leave enough time for a relaxed meal before service winds down. For a Friday lunch with friends or a family weekend stop, the appeal is an informal room and several different ways to make a plate.

FOOD

Namaste Flavours’ Friday-through-Sunday lunch buffet combines Indian curries with savory fried preparations, rice and breads. Recent selections include butter chicken, dynamite chicken, fish Amritsari and paneer sauté, giving the meal a broader range than its vegetable dishes alone suggest. The spread rotates, so these represent its recent offerings rather than a fixed lineup.

Butter chicken supplies a rich, sauced main course. Traditionally made with a tomato-and-butter gravy, often finished with cream, it contrasts with the buffet’s fried starters and sautéed preparations. Dynamite chicken adds a separate chicken choice to the recent selection, broadening the poultry offerings beyond the familiar curry.

Fish Amritsari brings a Punjabi preparation to the buffet. Named for Amritsar, it traditionally consists of fish coated in seasoned batter and fried, with roots in the city’s street-food cooking. It gives seafood a distinct place alongside the chicken dishes without repeating their curry format. The fish species is not identified.

Paneer sauté gives Indian fresh cheese a substantial role in the meal. Paneer holds its shape when heated rather than melting into a sauce, allowing it to be cooked in pieces. The sautéed preparation offers a different treatment from the gravy-based paneer curries common on Indian buffets, keeping the cheese itself central to the dish.

Gobi 65 brings cauliflower into the fried-appetizer selection. Gobi means cauliflower, and the 65 style generally involves a spiced, fried preparation rather than a curry. It offers a vegetable counterpart to the savory meat and fish starters, distinct from the mixed cooked vegetables also found in the spread. Other small fried appetizers and changing curries add to the selection.

Biryani contributes seasoned long-grain rice with an onion garnish, giving the rice its own flavor and substance. Plain white rice is also available as an accompaniment to the curries. The biryani’s particular ingredients can vary, so the rice dishes provide both a seasoned choice and a simpler base for the sauced mains.

Puri and other browned flatbreads accompany the meal. The puffed, fried puri are suited to scooping curry, while the other breads give diners another accompaniment to the chicken, paneer and vegetables.
