EXPERIENCE

Bath City Bistro gives downtown Mount Clemens two reasons to plan an all-you-can-eat meal: Sunday brunch and a Wednesday all-you-can-eat fried-chicken and sides. One makes room for waffles, eggs and biscuits with gravy; the other concentrates on chicken and its familiar supper companions. Both belong to a restaurant where getting together can continue beyond the table, thanks to Belgian feather bowling.

The bistro’s name recalls the mineral bathhouses that once made Mount Clemens known as Bath City, USA. Its restored turn-of-the-century building keeps brick and wood in view, with tall windows bringing light into the gathering spaces. That local history gives the restaurant character without making the meal formal. Brunch or chicken supper still feels like a comfortable reason to meet friends downtown.

Feather bowling adds a particularly sociable possibility to the outing. Players roll wooden discs along a trough toward a feather, a Belgian game the restaurant compares with bocce and shuffleboard. Three lanes occupy spaces on the main floor and upstairs. Playing is a separate arrangement, so the buffet can stand as lunch on its own, or the gathering can include a lane reservation if that’s the plan.

Sunday brunch leaves breakfast and lunch-minded diners plenty to agree on, while Wednesday offers a simpler chicken-supper invitation. The meal doesn’t require a private event booking; both are recurring public buffets. It’s the combination of a local bistro, a historic downtown setting and a distinctly hands-on pastime that makes the place memorable. The next round might involve another helping, or a wooden disc. Either way, company is a useful part of the plan.

FOOD

Sunday brunch at Bath City Bistro brings scrambled eggs, breakfast meats and potatoes together with waffles, French toast and biscuits with sausage gravy. It is a familiar breakfast spread with a few substantial lunch choices alongside it. The buffet makes room for a straightforward egg breakfast and for a sweeter plate, while chicken strips and macaroni and cheese give the later part of brunch something to say.

Biscuits and sausage gravy are a useful place to begin the savory breakfast discussion. They offer a bread-and-gravy course of their own, alongside the simpler scrambled eggs. Bacon and sausage supply the breakfast-meat choices, with potatoes available as another accompaniment.

Belgian waffles and chicken strips bring sweet breakfast and a more substantial savory choice into the same part of the menu. French toast provides another breakfast option for anyone drawn toward the sweeter dishes. No elaborate topping bar is needed to explain their place here: the waffles and French toast already give brunch a different direction from eggs, bacon and potatoes.

Grits add another breakfast preparation, while macaroni and cheese can accompany the chicken or make a small course of its own. They broaden the choices without turning the buffet into an unrelated dinner menu. The Sunday selection is clearly a brunch, with breakfast doing much of the work and the chicken and pasta giving lunch-minded diners a little more room.

The cooler choices change as the morning passes. Assorted fruit is offered until noon, with side salads taking its place after that. That is a useful distinction for a group choosing between an earlier breakfast outing and a later lunch. Mimosas and Bloody Marys are separate purchases, so they can join the occasion without being part of the basic buffet meal.

Wednesday’s offer has a more focused purpose: fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, macaroni and cheese, green beans, coleslaw and cornbread. The accompaniments give it the shape of a complete chicken supper. Potatoes and gravy provide one familiar pairing, while the green beans and slaw offer alternatives alongside the richer chicken and pasta. Cornbread finishes the advertised collection of sides.
