Bombay Deluxe Closes in Anchorage, Alaska After More Than 20 Years

The Northern Lights Boulevard restaurant paired a daily lunch buffet with visible clay-oven cooking.

Bombay Deluxe in Anchorage, Alaska, has announced its closure after more than 20 years in business, bringing an end to a longtime Indian restaurant and its seven-day lunch buffet.

The restaurant’s October 2 announcement confirmed that its doors had closed. An exact final public service date was not specified.

At 555 West Northern Lights Boulevard in Midtown, Bombay Deluxe traced its history to the early 2000s. Its own account of the restaurant described a lunch buffet served every day, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian curries.

The kitchen gave diners a view of its clay oven through a glass window. Naan and tandoori chicken, lamb and shrimp were among the preparations the restaurant highlighted. A good view of naan coming from the oven is its own small lunch attraction.

That window was part of the experience long before the closure. In a review originally published by Anchorage Press in October 2007, writer Bingo Barnes described the visible tandoor, red dining room and high-backed booths.

His meal was a combination dinner: lamb korma with palak paneer, dal makhni, rice pilau, naan and kheer badaam. The review provides a snapshot of the restaurant nearly two decades ago, with breads, vegetarian dishes and a rice-pudding finish already central to the table.

The restaurant’s menu also extended beyond the lunch buffet. Its OpenTable listing highlighted chicken or lamb tikka masala, vegetable samosas and palak paneer among its popular dishes. The bread selection included garlic naan, onion kulcha and paneer kulcha; these were individually listed menu items, alongside the daily buffet format.

The seven-day lunch spread was a distinctive part of Bombay Deluxe’s long run: vegetarian and meat curries, breads and a kitchen diners could watch. After more than 20 years on Northern Lights Boulevard, that is a buffet address we’ll miss.
