EXPERIENCE

Honey Pig Korean BBQ has a family resemblance that runs deeper than the pig on the sign: Korean barbecue shared around a table, with banchan beside the meat and plenty of interest in pork belly. Founded by Micky Kim, the Korean-American family business has restaurants in Virginia, Maryland and Texas. Its all-you-can-eat offering belongs to particular locations and formats, so the first decision is which Honey Pig meal you’re after.

Katy offers unlimited Korean barbecue with a weekday lunch selection and two broader packages. Here, staff help cook the meat at the table, giving newcomers a way into the meal without requiring an evening’s apprenticeship at the grill. Pork belly can arrive plain, spicy or seasoned with soy and garlic; the side dishes keep dinner recognizably Korean well beyond the meat order.

Manassas and the Normandy Plaza restaurant in Ellicott City take a different approach, pairing Korean barbecue with hot pot and a self-serve buffet. The choice between grilling and simmering becomes part of the occasion. A group can share the barbecue while exploring the ingredients for the pot, with more to discuss than whose turn it is to order beef.

The rooms have their own personalities. Katy’s red paneled walls, stainless-steel extraction hoods and bright screens suit a casual, animated barbecue dinner. That setting represents one restaurant, rather than a design used everywhere. Check the location’s actual AYCE menu before arriving: the brand also serves conventional barbecue meals, and Katy’s higher package places limits on several premium cuts. Ashburn and Centreville also publish their own A and B menus. Unlimited dinner can still contain a few very specific boundaries.

FOOD

Pork belly gives Honey Pig’s Katy AYCE menu its most useful starting point. The A package includes sliced and thinly sliced versions, plus garlic butter, soy garlic, spicy and curry-seasoned pork belly. Those are real alternatives within the same cut: you can keep the pork comparatively straightforward or give the seasoning more attention. The weekday lunch list is narrower, but still includes several pork-belly preparations.

Beef brisket brings thin slices to the grill, while beef bulgogi puts the emphasis on marinated meat. Spicy bulgogi and Hawaiian beef bulgogi broaden the choices without requiring a premium steak order. Soy-sauce pork bulgogi and spicy pork bulgogi offer another comparison within the marinated meats. Chicken gets soy, spicy and curry versions, too, making the seasoning choices a substantial part of the menu rather than a single alternative to beef.

Katy’s B package adds LA galbi, steak, soy-garlic steak, beef hanging tender and boneless rib. The menu marks those premium selections for limited ordering, so this is an expanded assortment rather than unlimited repeats of every cut. Shrimp, garlic-butter squid, spicy squid, baby octopus and small octopus also appear on B. That seafood selection gives the broader package a reason to exist beyond the steak choices.

The accompaniments deserve proper attention. Green-onion salad, shredded radish, cucumber salad and pickled radish paper provide several ways to put vegetables beside the meat. Lettuce and ssamjang, listed here with garlic and jalapeño, can turn a piece of barbecue into a wrap. Sesame oil with salt keeps the dipping choice simple; garlic sauce and Honey Pig spicy sauce offer more pronounced alternatives. There’s no obligation to give every piece the same finish.

Kimchi, bean sprouts and stir-fried fish cake help make the side dishes part of the meal. At Katy, grilled kimchi and bean sprouts are also a useful accompaniment to pork belly. Their place alongside the barbecue is a good reason to look beyond the meat list when deciding what deserves another order. The vegetables aren’t just there to fill the spaces between cuts.

Seafood pancake and kimchi pancake bring two savory pancake choices, while fried dumplings and fried vegetables add other cooked preparations. Japchae supplies Korean glass noodles; tteokbokki brings rice cakes into the selection. Soybean-paste stew and steamed egg give the table dishes to enjoy away from the grill, and corn cheese offers exactly the sort of warm, cheesy diversion its name suggests. These choices appear on Katy’s published AYCE menus, including its lunch selection.

At the participating Hot Pot + BBQ restaurants, the buffet and simmering pot broaden the meal beyond Katy’s grill menu. Manassas and Normandy Plaza advertise meats, seafood and vegetables in a combined buffet format. Choose the cooking format and local package first: Katy’s named cuts and accompaniments are representative of that barbecue program, while the hot-pot restaurants have their own selections. Honey Pig offers several worthwhile ways to have an unlimited Korean meal, without turning them into one imaginary menu.
