EXPERIENCE
Cafe East is a longstanding Chinese buffet in Humble’s Bender Square, with barbecue ribs, seafood and sushi among the reasons to give the hot line more than a quick glance. It serves all-you-can-eat lunch and dinner in a broad dining room that suits the restaurant’s role as a local gathering place. This is a substantial neighborhood buffet, with more to its food than the familiar chicken-and-fried-rice combination.
Cafe East was already established at this address when the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies chose it for an officers’ luncheon during its 2008 conference. That gives the restaurant a documented history in the neighborhood stretching back well beyond its current buffet lineup. Families and tables of friends still make good use of the room, especially when lunch gets busy.
Outside, the large Cafe East letters and colorful fan-like sign motif are the landmark to look for. Indoors, blue and purple ceiling accents brighten the buffet area, with booths along the walls and tables spreading across the room. The setting is informal and lively. A row of hot dishes, a separate sushi selection and the fruit-and-dessert display give the food much of the visual interest.
A host handles seating, and servers attend to drinks and used plates while diners visit the buffet. Cafe East can be a busy lunch room, so it makes sense as a casual meal with time to sit and talk between trips. Friday and Saturday bring later evening hours, with a listed 10pm close. The same buffet that works for an everyday lunch can accommodate a longer family dinner too.
FOOD
Barbecue ribs might not be your first thought when planning a Chinese buffet lunch, but they’re a good reason to look around at Café East. Pork ribs are among the offerings documented here, alongside Chinese-American favorites, seafood and sushi. The selection rotates, so consider these examples of the spread rather than a promise that every dish will appear at every meal.
Orange chicken and General Tso’s chicken offer a familiar starting point. You can build a meal around those favorites, add an egg roll and some fried rice, or leave room to explore the barbecue and seafood. That flexibility is part of the appeal: nobody at the table has to settle on the same kind of dinner.
Seafood offers another reason to branch out. Stuffed crab, battered shrimp and mussels have all appeared in the selection, along with other shrimp preparations. These give seafood-minded diners several options to look for, whether they’re putting together a mostly seafood meal or adding a few pieces alongside the chicken and ribs.
For a smaller first plate, egg-drop or hot-and-sour soup can be paired with egg rolls or wontons. Bao buns have also been documented, adding another option beyond the fried starters. California rolls are among the sushi choices, useful for anyone who likes to include a few rolls without making sushi the whole meal.
Dessert deserves a look before you decide you’re finished. The selection has included espresso cake, assorted mini cakes and small frosted pieces with colorful sprinkles, as well as fruit. Coffee-dessert fans have an obvious candidate in the espresso cake; everyone else can see which of the smaller sweets catches their eye. After a meal with this many choices, one more small decision seems fair.
