EXPERIENCE
Red River BBQ & Burger brings Texas barbecue and an all-you-can-eat salad bar together on South Mason Road in Katy. You can make the salad bar your meal, add an individually ordered meat, or choose one of the dinners that includes access to it. That makes this a useful place for a group whose appetites don’t quite match: the person thinking about brisket and the person thinking about salad can settle on the same restaurant.
The Katy location opened in 2011, following the wider brand’s start in 2002. Its barbecue is smoked over Texas post oak, and the restaurant has outdoor seating and a children’s play area alongside the dining room. The covered entrance, with its timber posts and stacked firewood, suits a place where barbecue remains a substantial part of the menu even if your own meal starts at the salad bar.
Ordering is casual and begins at the counter. The salad bar gives you the freedom to help yourself, while meat plates and other entrées are separate choices. Read the combinations before ordering: some include the bar, and others offer a paid protein addition.
For an ordinary lunch or dinner, the regular menu’s unlimited salad bar is the straightforward option to keep in mind.
FOOD
The all-you-can-eat salad bar is the regular unlimited offering at Red River’s Katy restaurant. Order it on its own if salad is the meal you want, or consider one of the combinations that brings barbecue into the picture. The appeal is the freedom to return to the bar while choosing separately how much meat, if any, you want alongside it.
The menu lists ranch, bleu cheese, honey mustard, Italian and fat-free ranch dressings. The bar’s individual ingredients can change, so choose from what’s set out rather than arriving with a particular topping in mind.
Turkey breast and chopped brisket are among the paid additions to a salad-bar order. Barbecue chicken, grilled chicken and chicken tenders are alternatives, giving the combination more range than a single smoked-meat option. These are individual portions added to an unlimited salad meal; another trip to the bar doesn’t include another serving of the protein.
Several full dinners include the salad bar. Chicken-fried steak comes hand battered with cream gravy, while the grilled chicken dinner adds sautéed onions and mushrooms. Pepper Jack Chicken brings cheese and jalapeños into its topping. These are useful choices when you’d like a substantial cooked entrée and still want to return for salad.
If your table wants an appetizer, Texas Hushpuppies combine brisket, barbecue sauce and pepper jack in a battered, fried bite. They’re a separately ordered addition, with a more specifically Red River character than another basket of fries. Keep them as an optional extra; the unlimited salad bar is a complete order of its own.
