EXPERIENCE

Oriental Gourmet brings a particularly interesting mix to the Chinese buffet on Houston’s Gulf Freeway. Pork feet are a recurring attraction alongside salt-and-pepper shrimp, sesame chicken and garlic green beans. There’s familiar Chinese-American comfort food here, certainly, but the pork dishes and a custom-grill component give the restaurant more to talk about than a lineup of chicken in different sauces.

At 8456 Gulf Freeway, the restaurant occupies a low shopping-center storefront with broad windows and red lettering above the entrance. The illuminated name makes a bright splash across the otherwise simple frontage. Inside, the meal centers on the buffet, with ready-to-serve hot dishes, soups and a smaller sushi selection. Lunch and dinner both use this self-service format; takeout is a separate way to eat from the restaurant.

Oriental Gourmet has the practical appeal of a place that can become part of an ordinary week. Its food includes dishes specific enough to inspire a return visit—pork feet for one person, green beans and fish for another—alongside the noodles and chicken that make a Chinese buffet familiar. Staff look after the table, and the grill adds the possibility of something cooked separately from the main line.

It’s a useful restaurant to know when your companions’ tastes cover quite a distance. Someone enthusiastic about bone-in pork can eat with someone who would happily make dinner out of sesame chicken and lo mein. The pork and vegetable dishes give a familiar buffet format a few less predictable choices.

FOOD

Pork feet give Oriental Gourmet its most distinctive food lead. The attraction of this cut is the soft skin and rich, yielding texture around the bones, rather than a large piece of lean meat. It makes for more involved eating than boneless chicken, and that is part of its appeal. Here, pork feet share the buffet with Chinese-American staples, seafood and vegetables. Dishes change, so the selection described here is representative rather than a fixed daily menu.

Salt-and-pepper shrimp provide a savory counterpart to the pork and sweeter chicken dishes. In this familiar style, the point is the seasoning around the shrimp rather than a generous coating of sweet sauce. Sesame chicken offers the other sort of pleasure: the sweet-savory, sauced preparation that has earned a lasting place on Chinese-American menus. Together, they bring both savory seasoning and a sweeter glaze to the hot line.

Wings and cheese wontons bring smaller savory dishes into the meal. Wings offer poultry in a different form from the boneless, sauced chicken, while cheese wontons combine a fried wrapper with a soft filling. They work naturally alongside soup and noodles as well as the more substantial meat dishes. Fish also appears among the buffet’s offerings, extending the seafood beyond shrimp without turning the whole meal into a specialist seafood spread.

The vegetables deserve a proper place in this picture. Garlic green beans bring their own seasoning, and mushrooms add an earthy counterpart to the sweeter chicken preparations. They offer a savory accompaniment to the pork and fish. Lo mein supplies the noodle side of the meal, bringing a familiar Chinese-American staple alongside the vegetables and richer hot dishes.

The soup selection covers several quite different comforts. Egg-drop soup is the gentle one, known for its fine strands of egg in broth. Hot-and-sour soup offers the tang and peppery heat associated with that classic style, while cabbage soup adds another vegetable-based bowl.

The custom-grill component brings cooking to order into a meal otherwise based on prepared dishes. A Mongolian-style counter is another way to enjoy meat and vegetables cooked for you, with a separate preparation alongside the ready-to-serve buffet. Confirm the current grill choices and inclusion before ordering.

Sushi remains a supporting selection. Potatoes, chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese fill out the more familiar comfort-food end of the buffet, particularly for a companion whose tastes run beyond the Chinese dishes.
