EXPERIENCE

La Brisa’s League City restaurant serves a Sunday breakfast buffet with a Mexican and Tex-Mex appetite: tamales, barbacoa, menudo and chilaquiles, followed by as much attention to the omelet station as the morning allows. Waffles, biscuits and gravy share the spread, but the savory Mexican dishes give breakfast its particular character. This is a weekly breakfast offering within a restaurant otherwise known for a broader Mexican menu.

The North Wesley Drive property has an informal, social setting, including a covered outdoor bar and patio. Heavy palapa timbers and the glowing LA BRISA marquee make the entrance particularly memorable. The bulb-lit name has a little evening sparkle about it, even when the reason for arriving is breakfast. The covered outdoor area is part of the restaurant’s character; the Sunday buffet isn’t presented as an outdoor dining requirement.

The live breakfast station gives the morning a little activity beyond the self-service dishes. An omelet or chorizo taco is prepared to order, while tamales and the other hot foods are part of the spread. There’s time to enjoy those first dishes while something else is cooking, with breakfast arriving in a couple of stages rather than all at once. It’s a sociable way to spend part of a Sunday morning.

The regular buffet runs Sundays from 9am – 12pm. Holiday brunches have their own arrangements, so this is a plan for an ordinary Sunday morning rather than a long afternoon outing. Arrive with time for both the savory food and something sweet. A breakfast that includes barbacoa and French toast deserves a little more attention than a hurried cup of coffee.

FOOD

Sunday breakfast takes a savory turn with pork and chicken tamales, barbacoa and menudo. Carne guisada, cheese enchiladas and chilaquiles make this a good morning to arrive hungry; waffles can wait until the second plate. The tamales are homemade, and the spread puts these Mexican dishes together with the restaurant’s Tex-Mex favorites. It’s a breakfast that can begin with a tamale and a spoonful of beans before eggs enter the conversation.

Beef and chicken fajitas and quesa-birria tacos extend the savory side. Cheese enchiladas bring another cheese-filled dish alongside the meats, while chilaquiles keep the meal firmly in breakfast territory. A plate can be deliberately savory from beginning to end, with the familiar breakfast sweets saved for later rather than crowded in beside the tacos.

The live station prepares omelets and breakfast tacos. Bacon, chorizo and ham are the meat choices, with American or mozzarella cheese and vegetables including mushrooms, spinach, peppers, onions and tomatoes. Chorizo and jalapeños suggest a more assertive breakfast taco; ham, mushrooms and cheese give an omelet another useful combination. Cilantro and pico de gallo carry those breakfast-taco flavors further.

Flour and corn tortillas belong with the Mexican side of breakfast, especially alongside barbacoa or fajitas. Refried beans and charro beans offer two accompaniments, with Mexican rice, brunch potatoes and salsa ranchera completing that part of the spread. There’s enough here to keep the plate closely tied to the restaurant’s kitchen: meat, beans, tortillas and salsa, with the potatoes bringing it back around to breakfast. The menu can change, so the particular spread may vary.

Smoked bacon, sausage links and sausage patties bring the American breakfast into the same meal. Biscuits and peppered gravy are especially at home here, with the gravy’s pepper giving a savory answer to all the syrup waiting nearby. A biscuit can follow the Mexican dishes just as easily as it can accompany bacon and sausage.

Then come waffles, pancakes and French toast, with strawberry sauce, whipped cream, jellies and syrup among the toppings. Sugar-free syrup is available too. French toast with strawberry sauce makes a straightforward sweet plate after the meats and beans, while waffles leave room for the syrup-and-whipped-cream approach. At this point, a second plate sounds less like indecision and more like a reasonable response to the menu.

Watermelon, honeydew, pineapple and cantaloupe are requested through the server. They give breakfast a fresh-fruit finish alongside the sweeter station. Children’s dishes include cheese quesadillas, chicken strips, macaroni and cheese, fries and cereals. They’re part of the spread too, keeping the table’s smaller breakfasts close at hand while the adults decide whether there’s room for one more tamale.
