EXPERIENCE

Lucky Village Chinese Buffet is a Westchase all-you-can-eat restaurant with more than 20 years on Westheimer Road and a newly elaborate setting for familiar Chinese buffet food. Its renovated dining room gives a casual lunch or dinner an unexpected amount to look at: curved gold ceiling forms, large mural panels and tall arched windows. Dumplings and fried rice have acquired rather handsome surroundings.

The restaurant returned from renovation in 2026, keeping its buffet format while changing the rooms around it. Gold ceiling elements repeat over the main dining room, with long views between the tables and windows. The detail gives the room a sense of occasion, while the meal remains informal: soup, appetizers and hot dishes selected from the buffet, with sushi and seafood also part of the offering.

The restaurant’s longstanding place in the neighborhood rests on a familiar kind of outing, one that can begin with hot-and-sour soup and continue through pepper steak, chicken dishes or shrimp. The renovation gives that meal a striking new backdrop without turning it into a different dining format.

It’s an inviting combination for a catch-up lunch or a group dinner: an established neighborhood restaurant with something new to discuss overhead. The arched windows and murals reward a look around between plates, and the Chinese buffet keeps the occasion approachable. A meal can feel a little dressed up even when the next decision is whether to go back for an egg roll.

FOOD

Pepper steak, Mongolian beef and several chicken preparations keep Lucky Village’s buffet rooted in familiar Chinese restaurant cooking. Sweet-and-sour, almond and black bean sauce chicken offer different directions for the first plate, with fried rice and egg foo young among the other choices. The selection changes, but this is a buffet where the Chinese hot dishes deserve attention before you wander over to the seafood.

The sauces make the chicken selection worth a second look. Someone drawn to sweet-and-sour can find that preparation among the shrimp dishes too, while black bean sauce chicken offers another savory option. You can try a small helping without committing dinner to one large entrée, which is one of the nicer reasons to choose a buffet in the first place.

Soup and appetizers make a good opening. Wonton, egg drop and hot-and-sour soups share the offering with dumplings, egg rolls and chicken wings. A bowl and an egg roll are enough to get lunch underway while you decide what looked most promising at the hot counter. The renovated dining room gives you something to admire between trips, too.

Shrimp appears in several forms: with coconut sauce, in a sautee, or boiled. Those are meaningfully different ways to enjoy the same seafood, so there is more to this section than simply spotting a shrimp tray. Crawfish can also join the spread. Shellfish varies by service, so treat it as part of the changing selection rather than a fixed daily seafood feast.

The sushi station includes nigiri and maki. A few pieces can be a separate course, followed by a return to the Chinese dishes, rather than being squeezed onto an already crowded plate of sauced chicken and rice. That is the appeal of Lucky Village’s food: familiar hot dishes, several soups, prepared seafood and sushi, with enough reason to make another trip because something genuinely interests you. The new room supplies the flourish; dinner still begins with what looks good on the counter.
