EXPERIENCE
Gangnam KBBQ & Sushi brings an all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue and sushi dinner to Conroe’s South Loop 336. The beef gives the table a good starting point, with short ribs, ribeye and marinated bulgogi to consider. But give the kitchen and sushi orders some attention too. An egg bomb, a hot soup and a few well-chosen rolls give dinner plenty to offer between rounds at the grill.
Cooking happens on a wire grate set into the table beneath a descending metal exhaust hood. It keeps everyone involved: the meat needs tending, the small dishes need passing, and the conversation can carry on around both. This is a meal for company that enjoys sharing the decisions as well as the food. There’s enough to do at the table without appointing one person permanent grill supervisor.
The prepared dishes give that shared dinner some welcome flexibility. Someone can enjoy sushi while another person concentrates on the barbecue, and a hot bowl or a plate of dumplings gives the table something to share without waiting for another cut to cook. The egg bomb is particularly sociable, arriving as a puffy egg dish for the group. It merits a little attention before everyone turns back to the beef.
Gangnam suits a birthday gathering or an evening with friends who want dinner to be part of spending time together. The appeal is the combination: Korean barbecue with banchan and hot kitchen dishes, plus a substantial selection of sushi. Allow time to enjoy those different parts of the meal. The table may agree on the short ribs and still have quite a bit to say about the rolls.
FOOD
LA galbi and ribeye give the barbecue two appealing beef cuts to begin with. The galbi brings bone-in short ribs to the wire grill; ribeye offers a steak cut alongside them. They make a useful starting order for a table interested in comparing cuts, with rice, dipping sauces and banchan to enjoy as the meat cooks. Kimchi brings tang and heat among the small dishes, giving the beef a lively accompaniment.
Spicy bulgogi and Hawaiian bulgogi add marinated beef to the order. They give the table a choice beyond short ribs and ribeye, with the spicy version for anyone who wants more heat.
Give the hot dishes a place early in the order. Kimchi soup brings a bowl to enjoy with the rice and grilled meat, and the egg bomb offers a soft, puffed egg dish to share. The puffed egg settles as it cools, making it a dish to enjoy promptly when it reaches the table. The egg bomb is limited to one per table.
Korean fried chicken and karaage bring chicken from the kitchen, with the latter offering bite-size pieces alongside the barbecue. Gyoza and shumai add dumpling choices, too. Pork gyoza is a particularly straightforward order for a group that likes a savory dumpling with its meat, while shumai gives the table another prepared dish to pass around. There’s good reason to leave a little space among the raw meat trays.
The sushi selection includes salmon, escolar, yellowtail and seared salmon. That gives fish enthusiasts several choices even before the specialty rolls enter the conversation.
The Nemo Roll combines a filling of spicy tuna and avocado with salmon on top and spicy mayo. Sky Diver offers a different combination: kani tempura and cucumber with eel, avocado, sesame seeds and eel sauce. These are substantial choices for diners who enjoy elaborate rolls, with the salmon-and-tuna combination on one side and the eel-topped tempura filling on the other.
Salmon Amazing makes salmon the focus, pairing a spicy-salmon and avocado filling with salmon on top and mango sauce. Tuna Bomb has pepper tuna on top, with spicy tuna, jalapeño, avocado and spicy ponzu rounding out the roll. The mango sauce and the pepper-and-ponzu combination give the two rolls quite different finishes.
Sesame balls add a sweet choice among the kitchen dishes. They can have a place beside the savory orders or provide a small finish after a dinner of barbecue, dumplings and rolls.
