EXPERIENCE

King Star Seafood Buffet is a casual Bellaire Boulevard restaurant for an all-you-can-eat meal of seafood, Chinese hot dishes, sushi and hibachi. The glowing crown between KING and STAR gives its shopping-center storefront a little ceremony. Underneath the flourish is a neighborhood lunch-and-dinner stop where a helping of spicy crawfish and something cooked to order can be part of the same visit.

Covered frontage and a recessed glass entrance place it firmly in the everyday shopping-center setting. After dark, the illuminated crown and colored bands above the door make the restaurant easy to recognize. The sign has some showmanship; the occasion can be as ordinary as dinner after errands. The everyday bustle of the shopping center is part of the setting.

Staff handle seating and drinks, while diners visit the buffet for their food. The hibachi station adds one distinct stop: choose from the ingredients on offer and have a portion cooked for you. That individual preparation sits alongside the ready-to-serve hot dishes and sushi platters, giving the buffet another point of interest beyond the seafood counters.

Whole crawfish and shell-on crab make this a meal with a little work to do at the table. For someone who enjoys peeling shellfish, that is part of the outing, as much as choosing the next helping. The restaurant stays casual enough for an ordinary lunch, with room in the meal for Chinese hot food and a dessert afterward. The crown makes an entrance; the shellfish gives you a reason to stay.

FOOD

Spicy Chili Shrimp is tossed with chili peppers and vegetables in a savory, slightly spicy preparation. The shrimp’s sweetness suits the chili seasoning, and the vegetables belong in the helping too. Fried rice and noodles make natural company for the sauce. The buffet changes between services, including shellfish, sushi, hibachi ingredients and desserts, so the dishes here describe its range rather than a fixed daily lineup.

Zesty crawfish brings the seasoning to whole shellfish, with peeling very much part of the pleasure. Crab and seafood-boil selections extend that shell-on side of the meal. The crab sections come with sliced onion and green chilies around the naturally sweet meat, so take a little of those vegetables with the crab.

Mussels with cheese and fried catfish give the seafood counter two more choices worth a look. The cheese-topped mussels are a richer hot dish; catfish brings a familiar Southern favorite into this Chinese-and-seafood meal. If the crawfish has kept you busy peeling, a piece of fried fish is a welcome change of pace. It can go straight from plate to fork. No negotiations with a shell required.

Chicken wings, string beans, fried rice and noodles give you plenty to eat beyond the seafood. They are also useful companions to the chili shrimp and other sauced dishes. The hibachi station adds a portion cooked from the ingredients you select, so it is worth checking before you fill the plate entirely from the ready-made pans.

Avocado-topped sushi rolls and sauce-finished pieces offer another option alongside the hot food. Try a few while your hibachi order is being prepared, or make them a separate course between trips to the seafood. The exact rolls change with the spread; you don’t have to decide the whole lunch from the first plate.

Melon, pineapple and orange pieces offer a fresh finish, though the assorted cakes are worth remembering among the desserts. A little fruit-flavored custard after spicy shrimp or crawfish sounds like a sensible final helping also. There is plenty of seafood here, but no rule says it has to have the last word.
