EXPERIENCE

A warm Baked Salmon Roll and a sizzling plate of beef bulgogi give Kimoto Premium Sushi a welcoming introduction, even for someone still making friends with raw fish. This Westheimer restaurant serves all-you-can-eat sushi at lunch and dinner, preparing orders in the kitchen and bringing them to the table. Sashimi, nigiri and rolls are central to the meal, with cooked dishes worth ordering in their own right.

That makes Kimoto an easy suggestion for a sushi date or a group with different appetites. Everyone can order from the same restaurant without needing the same enthusiasm for sashimi. The kitchen handles the cooking, leaving the table free for conversation and the next order. Beef and pork bulgogi and chicken teriyaki are among the hot dishes included in the AYCE selection.

The softly lit room gives dinner a little occasion, with glowing lantern displays and branching chandeliers above the tables. There’s a full bar for cocktails, sake, beer and wine, ordered separately from the food. The covered patio offers another setting, with hanging lights and pink blossoms along its boundary. Either could suit a birthday dinner or a catch-up with friends; the restaurant recommends reserving for larger groups and busy evening meals.

Kimoto is near the Galleria, handy for turning a shopping trip into a sushi supper. Its separate à la carte menu includes lunch combinations and premium fish, so be clear about which meal you’re ordering. The ordinary unlimited option already gives a table plenty to enjoy, from a few pieces of fish to something hot from the kitchen and dessert.

Greater Houston Destination

FOOD

The Baked Salmon Roll is a warm, creamy choice among Kimoto’s dinner rolls. It makes a good starting point for someone who enjoys a richer cooked preparation, with Houston Roll and Shibuya Crossing Roll offering spicier possibilities. It is an inviting choice between orders of sashimi, especially when dinner calls for something warm as well as raw fish.

Salmon and tuna give a sashimi order familiar starting points, with super white tuna and seared nigiri also worth considering. The seared preparations offer a little cooking with the fish, while sashimi keeps attention on the slices themselves. Kimoto’s arranged platters make a handsome order for the table. If rolls usually dominate your sushi dinners, a few pieces of nigiri or sashimi are worth considering here before choosing another large specialty roll.

Beef bulgogi comes sizzling on a hot plate, with a savory, slightly sticky glaze. The hot beef is a welcome addition between sushi orders, particularly if the baked roll has encouraged a little interest in the cooked menu. Pork bulgogi and chicken teriyaki are also included among the made-to-order AYCE hot dishes. These arrive ready to eat, so the appeal of glazed beef doesn’t involve tending a tabletop grill through dinner.

Chicken fried rice brings some wok char to the cooked selection. It is worth ordering for that flavor, rather than simply as rice to accompany something else. Jalapeño poppers provide a tempura crunch and a little heat, while karaage and tempura add further fried-food possibilities. Hibachi steak gives meat enthusiasts another hot dish to consider alongside bulgogi. The crisp appetizers and sizzling plates are good reasons to look beyond the sushi section before the first order.

The premium fish is a separate purchase. A5 Japanese Wagyu, bluefin and fatty tuna, foie-gras eel and uni appear on the individually priced menu, with availability varying by season. A premium tasting add-on may also be offered. Ask about the current selection if those pieces are the main temptation; they aren’t an automatic part of the standard unlimited meal. Lunch and dinner AYCE selections differ as well, so a particular evening favorite may not belong to lunch.

Green tea ice cream provides a simple finish after fish, rice and the hot plates. For a separately ordered drink, the Lychee Delight mocktail brings bubbles, floral notes and a hint of rose. It suits someone who likes a fragrant drink with the meal and wants a little ceremony without alcohol. Cocktails and sake are available too, whether dinner begins with sashimi or that warm Baked Salmon Roll.
