EXPERIENCE

At Sandy’s Castle Restaurant, breakfast belongs to the LEGO holiday as surely as the building projects do. The restaurant occupies the Lighthouse at LEGOLAND’s Beach Retreat in Winter Haven, a seasonal lakeside resort across the road from the theme park. Its unlimited breakfast is served family style, with shared platters brought to the table. Before the day’s adventures, there’s a meal together—and considerably less organizing for the grown-ups.

The Beach Retreat opened in 2017, bringing colorful bungalow coves and a beach theme to the resort’s accommodation lineup. Sandy’s carries that playful identity indoors. Bright beach murals and a large LEGO sandcastle play area put children’s enthusiasm firmly in the plans. Little builders have something to do while breakfast is being prepared. A restaurant that understands the importance of a construction deadline. Very considerate.

The 270-seat room has the scale of a family resort restaurant, and breakfast seating is first come, first served. Arriving early is useful on busy mornings; the resort acknowledges that later arrivals can face a wait. Once seated, the appeal is the combination of a familiar breakfast and a place where children have a project of their own. This is a holiday dining room designed around family life, with all its competing priorities.

Breakfast is the all-you-care-to-eat offering; lunch and dinner follow an à la carte menu. Day visitors are welcome under the resort’s hotel-restaurant dining policy, too. Sandy’s particular character remains the morning: the Lighthouse, a family meal, and a LEGO day still ahead.

FOOD

Sandy’s breakfast begins with a shared hot platter of American morning staples: scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage links, and potatoes, with biscuits and gravy and a sweet breakfast variation joining the meal. The food has the familiar, hearty character of a family breakfast. That familiarity suits the setting. There’s plenty of novelty waiting in the LEGO world outside; the breakfast table can have eggs and biscuits on its mind.

The scrambled eggs and two breakfast meats give the savory platter its main substance, with potatoes alongside. The effect is a generous collection of breakfast favorites, served together at the family’s table. This is the part of breakfast with serious intentions, particularly for anyone whose holiday appetite has already reported for duty.

Biscuits and gravy bring a Southern touch, with the gravy served separately in a bowl. They belong comfortably to this hearty morning spread, with all the familiar breakfast company around them. A biscuit with ambitions. Quite right, too; there is a theme park across the road, and the day hasn’t even properly begun.

French toast sticks supply one of the sweet breakfast variations, and refills can be requested for individual components. Pancakes are another variation, so the sweet selection can change. French toast has a perfectly respectable place at a family breakfast. The children have no exclusive claim on it, however. Let’s be fair.

Fresh fruit, cereal, and yogurt are also included, with melon and strawberries among the changing fruit selections. These are the familiar cold breakfast foods around the hot platter, part of the same generous morning meal. The fruit bowl belongs to the family-table picture as much as the biscuits do: a shared breakfast with several recognizable favorites gathered together.

Coffee, tea, and juices come with breakfast. Vegetarian and vegan choices are available, with the specific selection varying. The program stays close to recognizable morning food, which is rather fitting for a restaurant where some of the most elaborate designs are being developed in the LEGO sandcastle. Breakfast has its own priorities: eggs, biscuits, a sweet variation, and another helping when a favorite has found its audience.
