EXPERIENCE
Gogi Hotpot & BBQ & Sushi puts all-you-can-eat sushi, Korean BBQ and hot pot under one roof on West Colonial Drive. Sushi comes with either BBQ or hot pot, and an upgrade brings all three to the table. There is also a separate sushi-only weekday lunch offer. The cooking tables have a shared grill and individual soup pots, an arrangement made for dinner with company. Someone is bound to appoint themselves keeper of the tongs. Let them enjoy the title.
The restaurant occupies a former Golden Corral site, where plans for Gogi were announced in 2022. The large room now makes space for cooking tables and buffet islands, with bright seating and colored lighting giving it a playful, contemporary look. An oversized toy-like figure against a mirrored wall adds a little pop-culture mischief. It is a casual setting with enough personality to suit an evening out, especially when the evening involves a whole table getting in on dinner.
K-pop has accompanied meals here, and Gogi has welcomed larger gatherings. The appeal is easy to see: there is something to do together as well as something to eat. Short ribs on the shared grill can keep the table occupied, while sushi and prepared cold dishes give the companion who would rather leave cooking to others plenty to enjoy.
Staff help has covered cooking instructions, temperature adjustments, broth refills and changes of grill paper or pans. For newcomers, that assistance is a welcome part of the meal. You can come curious about hot pot or Korean BBQ without needing to arrive as the group’s resident expert.
FOOD
Garlic shrimp and marinated short ribs belong near the top of a BBQ-minded Gogi wish list. The buffet lineup can vary, but its cooking selection has included these prepared choices alongside steak, chicken breast and thighs, and both marinated and unmarinated meats. The shrimp and ribs arrive seasoned for cooking; the plain cuts give sauce enthusiasts something to work with. A paper-lined grill with butter added has been part of the table service, too.
Hot-pot broth choices have ranged from Herbal Soup and spicy Szechuan to tomato, original and Tom Yum. If spicy broth is your usual order, Szechuan is the name to keep in mind. For a seafood pot, Tom Yum is another appealing possibility, with shrimp and clams among the ingredients Gogi has offered.
Noodles and potstickers give the soup a meal of its own. Thick, broad white noodles, pleated dumplings and sliced mushrooms make a good combination to look for, with broccoli, corn sections and sliced vegetables rounding out the cooking ingredients. The more adventurous end of the selection has included duck feet. There is room here for a substantial noodle-and-dumpling pot alongside the meat and seafood, with the vegetables getting a proper place at the table.
The sauce counter is worth a look if unmarinated meat appeals to you. Condiments have been labeled by name and heat, with separate wells and ladles for mixing a dip. You might want a little sauce for a plain cut from the grill or for dumplings from the soup. The marinated meats already bring seasoning of their own, so the sauce bar need not become a second dinner project.
Seaweed salad, baby octopus and edamame are among the prepared dishes that have accompanied the sushi. The octopus is served cold and ready to eat. These are worthwhile little plates alongside the cooking meal, particularly if baby octopus catches your interest. There is no reason to hurry past it on the way to another roll.
The sushi assortment has included nigiri, sashimi and rolls, with shrimp and krab among the roll fillings. It gives the BBQ and hot-pot packages something ready to eat while the table is busy cooking. The weekday sushi-only lunch offer is there for the day when rolls sound good and taking charge of a grill does not.
The dessert bar is included, with fruit among its offerings. Drinks cost extra: taro and strawberry boba milk teas, Tiger Latte and White Peach Oolong fruit tea are on the menu, along with sake and Japanese beers. An optional boba is a cheerful way to finish a meal that has already kept the table entertained. Of course, the included dessert bar deserves a fair hearing first.
