Two American buffet dining rooms disappeared from their local circuits this summer: Great American Buffet in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Shoney’s in Oak Hill, West Virginia. Local reports describe separate closures, with an especially short final chapter in Oak Hill, where Shoney’s had reopened only thirteen months earlier.
In Fredericksburg, the Fredericksburg Free Press confirmed the closure in its July 15 business roundup. Great American Buffet occupied 1780 Carl D. Silver Parkway in Central Park. The report gave neither a final service date nor a reason for closing.
The name continues elsewhere in Northern Virginia. Great American Buffet’s website still lists the Manassas restaurant at 8365 Sudley Road. Fredericksburg’s loss is one dining room’s departure, while the brand retains that other listed address.
Oak Hill’s brief second chapter
Oak Hill’s Shoney’s had barely begun its return. The restaurant at 242 Mall Road reopened July 24, 2025, after a shutdown dating to before the pandemic. On August 22, 2026, Lootpress reported that staff had named the following Sunday, August 23, as its last day.
Getting those doors open had taken years. Billboards and the restaurant’s sign had advertised a return in 2023–24. By April 2025, Lootpress was reporting renovations inside and outside the building, a newly paved parking lot, and work with the city on the reopening process. The familiar restaurant was getting a substantial fresh start.
When service finally resumed, the buffet came first. Staffing limitations meant Shoney’s initially offered buffet-only meals, with plans to restore the full menu later, according to Lootpress. After the long interruption, the buffet was the foundation of the restaurant’s return.
Lootpress did not report a reason for the second closure. The staffing shortage at reopening belongs to that earlier chapter; the August account did not connect it to the final service announcement.
Shoney’s undated Oak Hill page still carries operating information, leaving an awkward mismatch with the staff’s dated farewell. The undated listing supplies no newer reopening date to set against the August report. In Lootpress’s account, a return that had taken years to arrange lasted barely more than one.
